Every client thinks HMFH are good listeners . They have been told that on
every project and consider it the highest compliment.
The Committee should contact their references to understand their client
service. In their handout they have included 4 references who have worked
with HMFH and some of the other finalists .
HMFH suggested creating an advisory team of principals and superintendents
because Mashpee does not have a High School faculty or principal . Those
people the architect would spend time with don't exist yet.
QUESTIONS FROM THE COMMITTEE
Paul Griffin asked how long the design will take? How long for the
construction?
They responded design could be done in 6 months, 9 months comfortably .
Construction from 21 months to 2 years. You can rush it but you will pay
for it.
Bill Jones explained that only 3 grades and necessary support need to be
ready for Sept 1996 . Could they get part of the building open in time for
that while the remainder is completed?
HMFH responded that Mashpee proposes to divide the school into houses. One
house could come on line and then complete the remainder. That is an
important consideration so that the design can accommodate that need.
Steve Greelish asked about the Sandwich schools. He asked for insight on
what caused them to produce that design. What was the interaction with the
building committee? It is interesting but seems expensive and hard to
maintain .
HMFH said they were listening to their client. Sandwich wanted as much
pitched roof as possible. The exposed structure in some rooms is an
instructive element to the children ; it makes it more interesting to the
people using the room. The expense of maintaining , cleaning and re--
painting the exposed duct they don ' t' think is much more. The option was
presented to the Committee and they chose it. There is a combination of
classrooms , some with exposed ducts and some without.
At the Nauset school the upper level has cathedral ceiling and they have
said they like those spaces better.
Joe asked them to address the reason behind the entrance design at Wareham
High school .
HMFH responded it is a welcoming image to the students. It gives
importance to the building but it doesn ' t dwarf the students .
Bill Martiros said he has seen 3--4 of their schools and they all look
different. What is their thought process? How would you fit the high school
building into Mashpee?
HMFH responded they listen to the Committee . We present ideas and then sit
and criticize them with you. We don' t start by saying this is how we will
do your building. HMFH and the client interact. Each client has a
personality and we interpret your point of view.
Merry Sue asked if the pitched roofs were working?
Yes they are .
HMFH explained this building will be the largest structure in town . It
dill take great effort to keep it in scale with the community and with the
children who use it. We have built large schools on Cape Cod and have been
told it successfully reflects the community.
2
