interview. They talked about making corridors wide enough for students to
congregate , teachers would not want that !
Peter said they did like Palmer High School a lot, the donut shape was very
efficient. After visiting a lot of schools you can start to see
characteristics of the architect start to come through. Some firms have
more than others and Keyes is on the low end of that.
Bill Jones said you pay for that. Frills are expensive.
Peter responded if they are truly creative they will use inexpensive
materials and do good things with it. Creativity is important and so he
does not rank Keyes number 1 . He wants someone who is naturally pre-
disposed to do that, he does not want to have to push them. He thinks HMFH
is more creative than Keyes.
Bill Martiros said the architect should start with what is best, and see if
we can afford that.
SMMA
Merry Sue said she was very glad they brought the 2 guys from Perkins and
Will . They were very knowledgeable on education programming and up on
ideas. She was very excited by it. They are probably her first choice.
Michael said they did a bells and whistle presentation . He likes the
national perspective. They will bring national ideas to beef up Collabro
and DeMoura who are both very local . The programming is a very important
aspect.
Merry Sue added she is very concerned about Mashpee having no educators at
that level . They have national background and training .
Bill Martiros said they seem to be very creative and thinks this Committee
could interact with them very well . He had concerns about - will they be
there ( Perkins and Will ) through the project. He was very impressed by
them and their creativity.
Bill Jones agrees with Merry Sue , programming is the dominant issue . We
need someone to help us make choices and we can ' t even afford the principal
for the high school . Perkins and Will will bring that capability into it.
That is the biggest homerun any of them have hit. It make SMMA very
desirable firm.
Joe said Perkins and Will was a good choice for SMMA, it adds another
dimension . He was impressed with the Nantucket school , with the
creativity. They would be an excellent choice for us.
Janice said she was very impressed they were pursuing office space in
Mashpee , that is a real outreach .
Janice told this Committee that the School Committee members agree that as
a school system we are not equipped to plan a program of studies for a high
school . If we don' t have a principal we need a consultant. We have no
people trained in high school education . She agrees with Merry Sue that a
few high school students bringing ideas to this Committee would be great.
Paul visited Deerfield school designed by Phil Pennelli now with SMMA. The
school was well done , laid out well , sized for the students. The principal
had nice things to say about it, but he did not really deal with SMMA.
This Committee did a very intensive investigation of the first 5 firms , for
this firm we are only looking at 2 people . None of their engineers have
Jone a school at all . He called Santa Fe, who said they did not see much of
Perkins and Will , thought they acted as a consultant. At Deerfield , they
hired an outside consultant to do the color schemes . The school was very
11
