T. pleasant. It did have a condensation problem similar to the Middle School addition . The principal said they were a strong committee and if there are mistakes they must look to themselves. They did get good telephone support from them. There were some very creative things. Paul said SMMA said they need $125 per sq foot for construction and our program is based on $110 . He thinks their design fee will be higher , because of Perkins and Will . He thinks P & W is a good company but out of state issue may come back to haunt us. He likes them and thinks they would do a good job but has a nervous feeling . The first 5 firms received so much scrutiny. Steve said these second 5 firms we didn ' t even discuss as a committee. They all have a fresh slate . He was concerned about the Perkins and Will connection and what they would bring . He had the feeling SMMA probably had sufficient talent to do the job after this presentation he likes it! This joint venture gives us a lot of latitude . He is not too concerned about the cost aspect . The multi week charrette they suggested allows us tremendous input. The $120 per sq foot is not cast in concrete. Peter said we will hire a project manager/cost estimator who can help focus the architect. Paul said he did not see anything elaborate in Deerfield ' s design to bring them over another firm. That was $98 per sq foot elementary school in 1990, he couldn ' t see where the money was . Peter said he was originally concerned we couldn ' t evaluate their design capabilities . After looking at Nantucket, Phil Pinnelli did a great job, it was creative , he understood the program, it worked well . Most of the design will be done in Mass . and the programming done in New York . Joe explained Perkins and Will will do the programming , develop a diagram concept and come up with schematic . They will do the schematic floor plan . Pennelli will come in later , do some of the details . Peter said this Committee can demand certain things of the firm contractually . Nantucket School : Joe said the entrance was very appropriate , identifiable pavement. The building was a "street" design but not meandering. The second floor classrooms were naturally lit with pitched roofs. The flat roof section had some leaking . The metal double hung windows were a flaw. It was a condensed concept. The cafeteria was a very creative solution to divide the junior/senior high schools , was cleverly done. There was a lot of natural light . The auditorium was well done, seating for 800 people and wall opened and there was seating for 200 more. The sound/acoustics were good . There was natural light in the back, with shades , so it was not a dark room. They made a mistake with handicapped access which cost them a lot. It went to arbitration and was ruled SMMA insurance company had to pay. The swimming pool was noisy . The work was finished in 1990 at a construction cost of $115 per sq foot - island cost which are about 30% higher . DRA Merry Sue was happy they were interested in helping with programming . Michael said there was no one to ask his technology question to. Their computer consultant does not know that much about networks. 12
