Mark gave his opinion on the color choice . For the elementary school , grey
is .fine. This is a much larger building and people will have a hard time
with a building this size in grey . It will be harder for the community to
deal with . it will never be perceived as anything except concrete block.
The red block , with a darker red trim will give an appearance of brick ,
with white trim windows.
Mark said they will look at vinyl or aluminum cladding where there is wood.
They will come back with 3 alternatives that are more desirable than wood
and cheaper than brick.
Paul said he appreciates Mark's comments about the color of the building
and perception - it will be perceived as far more expensive if it is red
block. They visited a Flansburg school in red block and it was a stunning
building. It was however an elementary school and one-half the size of
this project. This is a big building . The Nantucket High School was grey
and blended in well . It was only a one story building however.
Mark presented some brochures of red block and grey block buildings.
Ed said with the grey and white the levels of contrast are very subtle . It
will look like one color all over. There will be a lot of contrast with
the red block and white trim, it will break it up.
Paul was concerned with the entrance view.
Dan said they can preserve the existing vegetation in the island and screen
the view somewhat from the parking lot.
Ed said the red is high contrast, warmer color.
The grey is lower contrast cooler color.
Mark and Ed think the community will warm up to the red .
Paul suggested the Committee agree to consider the red block and ask the
architect to look at the wood siding (alternatives) and also look at the
front entrance, to break it up, so it looks like 2 separate entrances .
Mark said he drew the drawings presented and the view will not be exactly
as shown in that drawing , you will not have that much of a view from the
entry road.
* Janice made a motion to recommend red block and direct the
architects to reconsider the wood siding and to present a different
rendering with a better focal point for the entry . Bill seconded
the motion.
Paul polled the Committee members on their color choice:
Red : Merry Sue , Janice, Joan , Paul , Bill
Grey : Steve and Joe.
Merry Sue changed her mind when they described the red as " rich" .
Paul said he changed his mind because the red , with white trim will break
it up .
** All members were in favor of the motion 7--0 . **
Ed presented a new classroom layout with the teaching wall adjacent to the
door. Teachers can control people coming and going from the room.
4
