for example.
Merry Sue said with a software package the principal should be able to
isolate his own sections.
Bill said he sees duplication of equipment. If the principal wants to talk
to a class, he can call the teacher with the message . Is this a wish list?
Merry Sue said this is the way to run a school .
Dr. DeMoura said the goal is to make everyone who comes to the school , to
learn or to teach , more efficient and effective. These items do just that.
There will be a clock in each classroom wired to a central bell system.
The Committee asked Manny Tavares his opinion on the discussion so far.
Mr. Tavares said last March he was asked to prepare a budget and he
developed a figure of $4 million . That has since been reduced to $2
million. The Committee has spent that already (during this discussion) .
Paul said the Committee will start with a wish list, then plug in prices
and see what they can afford .
Mr. Tavares said his estimate had $1 million for computers , it has been
reduced by 40% to $600 ,400 . The Committee needs someone to guide them
budget wise. He understands the network is also coming out of this budget
and his budget did not include that.
Paul said there is no separate network budget. In reality we need $5
million .
Mr. Tavares said what you end up with will probably be a fraction of what
you are talking about.
Paul said there will be discussion, with the Superintendent, the School
Committee and this Committee to prioritize and get down to the budget
number.
Mr. Tavares said there are integrated systems that pull together all of
these things they have been talking about, DuCane for example, it is
expensive but should be looked at .
Michael Pare said DuCane is bottom of the barrel equipment.
Mr. Tavares said that was just an example of an integrated system.
Michael said the Committee needs a good engineering consultant to come in
and show them what is out there .
Paul said the Committee is just having a general discussion of what they
want to see put in the building . The Committee wants a clear understanding
of how the building will be used . He will not vote to have an engineer
design a system now, before getting a good understanding of the process .
Steve added that all Committee members need to be comfortable with the
technology issue.
Other items in the classroom - 24-25 desks and teacher desk. All other
storage is built in. Are file cabinets built in?
Manny Tavares cautioned the Committee about the cost of casework . You have
to be very, very careful about how much storage you put in because it is
expensive.
Paul said some classrooms will not be occupied at first. He asked Mr.
Tavares and Dr . DeMoura what items they would recommend buying later, in
the future?
4
