MASHPEE HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 29 , 1994
TOWN HALL
Members Present: Merry Sue Ahlgren , Bill Martiros, Janice Mills , Peter
Dinizio, Joe Polito, Steve Greelish , Paul Griffin
Also Present: Tom Wren, Ian Aitchison, Bob Fournier, Ed Frenette, Phil
Poinelli , Dick Foster , Greg Taylor, Bob Whritenour, Bill Hauck
Meeting convened at 4 : 07 p .m.
MOHAWK CARPET PRESENTATION
Jack Lynch from Mohawk Carpets gave a presentation on carpets to the
Committee. First he answered questions about indoor air quality and it' s
relationship to carpet. There has been unfavorable publicity about
carpeting recently and it is unfair ; the carpeting industry has had no
opportunity to respond .
He presented a newspaper article about 2 cases which went to court on this
issue and were settled in favor of the carpet institute. He also presented
a pamphlet that explained what should be done to prevent the problem (odor)
from occurring . The odor is from the backing material - latex. Testing
shows that carpet contributes the least amount of odor in a building .
Paint contributes the most .
The carpet installer should open the rolls of carpet, when it is delivered,
before delivering it to the school building , for at least 24 hours. The
ventilation system in the school should be running for 4872 hours .
Mr. Lynch also provided a maintenance manual which Mohawk provides to their
clients . Key to successful carpet use is maintenance . If it is vacuumed ,
stains removed as they occur and cleaned periodically it will be
successful .
If the school will be doing their own maintenance they will have to invest
in equipment: large vacuums for large areas, commercial uprights for
smaller area, wand attachments and a pile lifter for heavily trafficked
areas . The manual also describes the various maintenance methods .
Mr. Lynch presented information on medi guard protection . This product is
applied in house during manufacturing of the carpet. It is not in all of
their products. It kills bacteria and prevents mold and mildew. It is
used in the health care industry . The entire carpet is treated and
bacteria then cannot live or grow in that carpet. It is not water soluble
so it won' t wash out.
Peter explained the middle school addition carpet was wet during July and
August. They then had it tested after that for mold spores and there was
no increase. The treated carpet was able to handle it.
Paul asked about the installer unrolling the carpet before it is brought to
the job. There are few places that have the ability to do that. To unroll
it then roll it back up, is that realistic?
Mr. Lynch said today it is . They need to give the odor a chance to escape.
Phil suggested having the carpet in place a longer period of time before
the building is occupied is another way to solve that.
Bill Martiros asked if outside of noise reduction , are there other
i
