advantages of carpet over another kind of material? How long will it last?
Mr. Lynch said the warranty says you will never be able to wear off more
than 10% of the yarn for the life of the building . It is guaranteed not to
make traffic lanes, with woven interlock, for 10 years. He recently met
with a Superintendent of a school that was replacing their carpet after 24
years.
Bill asked if he had any figures that compare the cost - to other materials
- life cycle costs. Why should he choose carpet?
Mr. Lynch said the main advantage is acoustical ; it is quiet.
Cost is an important factor also. If you decide what quality you are going
to use he could then project out the lifecycle cost.
Maintenance costs , tile is more labor intensive, carpet less expensive to
clean . He can provide those figures for Bill .
Joe asked if the carpet must be cleaned every day - vacuumed, to get the
dust smell out.
Mr. Lynch had a chart showing how often different rooms must be vacuumed .
Some daily , some weekly.
Joe asked if the dust will stay in the carpet unless you vacuum it out?
Mr. Lynch said carpet keeps the dust from flying around the air. It should
be vacuumed when it needs it. Maintenance is very important.
Merry Sue said she heard a complaint, by a teacher , about the smell after
the carpet is cleaned , from the cleaning chemicals .
Mr. Lynch said that is mentioned in the cleaning manual . You have to run
the HVAC system when it is cleaned. The cleaning industry is trying to cut
back on the amount of chemicals used . The key is ventilation .
Ian asked if carpeting will suffer more than other materials because of
staining?
Mr. Lynch said it depends on the stain . With carpeting , you probably won 't
see the stain.
He said he does not try to sell something that does not perform.
Ian asked if the warranty is voided if the maintenance procedures laid out
are not followed?
Mr. Lynch said not the wear warranty .
Greg Taylor asked the difference between cross woven and non cross woven
carpet? What is the difference in degree of quality for different weights?
Mr. Lynch reviewed a handout on this issue and the 4 different types of
carpet construction. Woven interlock is most successful . Weight is also
key. 30 oz carpet will look good even after 15 years. 20 oz woven
interlock will perform better than tufted.
SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT - Meeting with DEP
Paul Griffin , Bob Fournier , Tom Wren and Woodard and Curran met today with
DEP. Paul said they were very accommodating . DEP "suggested" Woodard and
Curran study alternative systems as well as a modified RBC plant and come
back with 1 or 2 options. They have assigned Bob Fagan to work closely
with our engineers to discuss the facts they already have on alternative
systems . George Cromby was very willing to listen . On the reduction to a
15 , 000 gallon plant, he said some of the date left him concerned and some
confused but he is willing to work with Weston and Sampson to clear up any
issues. He wants Weston and Sampon to make the filing . DEP may not agree
2
