There will be a $350 , 000 savings using block over brick.
Mr. McCue asked if that includes the waterproofing?
Phil said that will not add much . They are still exploring various blocks .
Paul said before proceeding with the block the Committee needs to see a
good rendering of what block will look like.
Janice would like to see a close up of the front entrance as well .
Paul said Mark Chen said he would do some details of the block.
Ed said they reviewed and discussed whether they need to animate the
entrance and feel it is inviting enough, fine the way it is.
They are not prepared to elaborate on the block tonight .
Paul explained the Selectmen need to see what it will look like in block
and a sample before they approve it.
Peter said it is an image problem. They have to sell the rest of the town
that block will look good .
The Committee also wants a list of buildings where they could view the red
block .
DINING AREA CEILING
SMMA presented a sketch of the two ceiling choices . They recommend making
it a totally exposed structural system, do away with all grillage and save
$19 ,000 .
Merry Sue asked about the sound?
Ed said they can use acoustical deck, sound will be about the same .
They will organize the pipes , conduit, etc so it is concealed and neat.
Sill said at the schools they visited , they saw some cafeterias like this
and it looked like a factory .
Peter asked why the posts are there? He thought it would be more open
space?
Ed explained they are needed to support the roof. The columns divide the
corridor from the dining area, they are 12 feet apart.
**The Committee agreed to the ceiling change and to take the entire $19 ,000
in savings . **
Paul said there is concern about the servery area, Perkins and Will was
going to do a sketch .
Ed presented a sketch. He explained there will be a maximum of 400
students going in and 400 going out of the cafeteria. There are 2 feeder
corridors , 10 feet wide and a 12 foot wide corridor in front.
Merry Sue said the people from the second floor have only 1 staircase to
come down - is there enough ways to get them up and down?
Phil said there are 4 stair cases, if there is a bottleneck at one ,
students will find another route . The stair capacity between floors is
adequate.
Merry Sue said students will most likely be coming from 1 wing of the
school - it is a concern .
Phil said the 4 egress stairs are sized per code - based on sq footage
occupancy . The code forces them to over design.
(Peter left the meeting at 6 :40 p .m. )
Joe asked how they can treat that corridor in front of the dining area,
7
