nitrate level . Mr. Pare needs definitive direction on the nitrate count you
want to be achieved and the size of the plant.
Peter asked if you can have a 15 ,000 gallon plant with nitrate of 5 parts?
Steve said you can. Is the density issue a red herring? Steve thinks it
is.
Paul said there will be hell to raise if this firm causes problems getting
the variance. Ed Frenette better give this some serious thought. He does
not think DWP had authorization to proceed. It is SMMA's risk in his
opinion.
Steve would like to find a way to work with this firm. They are competent.
The Committee should ask SMMA to try one more time to resolve it. He hates
to throw all that work away.
Paul said the two members of the firm he has dealt with have attitude
problems.
He suggested the motion be the Committee advise SMMA they are not happy
thats it. He has told Ed Frenette the Committee won ' t vote to not work
with DWP but it will be a long 2 years for SMMA if this causes problems.
Bill Hauck suggested the Committee continue to work with DWP but supply the
information to a third engineer to get the variance.
Weston and Sampson is retained by the town to review this anyway for its
total impact to the town . Chartwell has an engineering firm to review it.
The Committee could reimburse Board of Health to use Weston and Sampson.
Paul . said it will be difficult for DEP to make a decision (grant variance)
and go on record against the engineering firm of record 's recommendation .
Merry Sue said DWP has to do this job for both of their clients- the Town
and SMMA.
Joe said the additional $9 ,000 for re-design is based on DWP superseding
the Committee. Would they be willing to continue with the design process
for a 15 , 000 gallon plant, without additional fees?
Bob cannot answer for them. He would like to reach consensus on a
direction . If, for whatever reason, this firm does not work out, SMMA will
get another consultant and will support that and will work to get the new
firm on as quickly as possible.
Paul does not want to spend an additional $9 ,000 to do what they should
have done in the first place.
Paul amended his motion to include it is the Committee's position
they will not pay an additional $9 ,000 to design a 15,000 gallon
plant. Bill seconded the motion. 5 in favor, 2 against.**
Paul said money really isn 't the issue because the Committee will not pay
it. The issue is if the Committee feels comfortable with the consultant.
He doesn't seem to be listening to the Committee or doing what they want
him to do. $100 ,00 is a lot of money.
Peter asked what Mark Pare could say to make Paul happy?
Paul told Peter he 's right, probably nothing.
As a customer he is displeased and he has been telling SMMA that week after
week . It is obvious they didn ' t hear it. He is not going to put the
Committee in the position of telling them to change their consultant and
3
