Vacancies—Change"varied"to"various" <br /> Powers and Duties—Remove comma between host/or and add"The Committee shall not <br /> operate as an adjudicatory body." <br /> MOTION: Ms. Brown made a motion to approve these changes and to approve submission of <br /> this edited statement to the Town Manager to be reviewed and presented to the Selectmen. Ms. <br /> Johnson-Graham seconded the motion. All voted unanimously. <br /> Selectman Cotton inquired how the Committee wished to address the membership terms and there was <br /> agreement to discuss the issue at a future meeting. <br /> NEW BUSINESS <br /> Elect Chairperson and Vice Chairperson for 2018-2019 <br /> MOTION. Ms. Johnson-Graham made a motion to nominate Marie Stevenson as Chairperson <br /> for next year. Ms. Nadeau seconded the motion. All voted unanimously. <br /> MOTION: Ms. Nadeau made a motion to nominate Winnie Johnson-Graham as Vice <br /> Chairperson for 2018-2019. Ms. Wilson seconded the motion. All voted unanimously. <br /> Future Planning-The Chair suggested that the Committee await policy establishment from the <br /> Board of Selectmen prior to moving forward with planning. Selectmen Cotton suggested it was likely <br /> that Sam Houghton from the Mashpee Enterprise would report on the Committee's establishment. <br /> Selectman Cotton suggested that the Committee development a statement for the paper. . <br /> Ms. Wilson recommended sharing a statement on the Town's web page and in the future create a <br /> brochure outlining their work. Ms. Waterman suggested that September would be a good time to look <br /> ahead at their plans for the following six months. The Chair suggested finding the good and praising <br /> it, recommending that the Committee be proactive rather than reactive, such as the Boys Scouts with <br /> their work in the community discussed in previous meetings. Additional examples were given citing <br /> the Wampanoag prayer included in graduation, the introduction of multiple language books at the <br /> Senior Center or the Mashpee's beach sticker program for veterans. There was consensus to share the <br /> good things happening in Mashpee. Mr. Horner expressed his interest in establishing parking spots in <br /> town for veterans and Selectman.Cotton suggested that Town Hall would likely respond positively to <br /> such a request. There was discussion regarding ways to reach out to the public to learn more about the <br /> good things happening in Mashpee, such as Ms. Doyle's Mashpee Messaging, discussing with <br /> individuals and'discussion with the many groups around Mashpee. <br /> Ms. Waterman suggested inviting Falmouth's No Place for Hate Committee to share their ideas and <br /> successes with Mashpee. Ms. Waterman recommended also discussing with them about language in <br /> today's climate, regarding differences and inclusion. Ms. Wilson expressed caution about using <br /> Facebook as a town Committee. Selectman Cotton agreed, adding that it could be personal but not as a <br /> representative of the Committee. The Chair stated that social media was the current source of <br /> information and recommended CNN's United Shades of America. Ms. Johnson-Graham noted that her <br /> niece worked at the local t.v. station. <br /> It was suggested that Falmouth's No Place for Hate be invited to the September meeting, attending at <br /> 10:30, so that the Selectmen's status of the Committee could also be.discussed. Ms. Nadeau <br /> recommended inquiring further regarding the social media policy because the Committee membership <br /> would be public knowledge. There was caution expressed regarding the involvement in political <br /> 2 <br />
