KENNETH C.COOMBS SCHOOL <br /> SCHOOL COUNCIL <br /> TUESDAY,JUNE 4,2013 <br /> 3:00 P.M.- MAIN OFFICE CONFERENCE ROOM <br /> MEETING MINUTES <br /> Meeting called to order at 3:15 pm <br /> In attendance: <br /> Please refer to sign in sheet <br /> Public Comment: <br /> • Elaine addressed concern about losing a kindergarten classroom. Elaine is comfortable with <br /> current enrollment and will monitor new registrations carefully to decide whether or not to <br /> advocate for a new class. <br /> • Jo Ann Nadeau approached parents about joining council and PTO <br /> Minutes: <br /> • Amendment to May minutes-Flag Day actually scheduled for June 6 <br /> Amended minutes approved <br /> Old Business: <br /> • Elaine talked about changes in society&of broadening our ideas,She asked each person to write <br /> three critical areas of need,common core non-negotiable.Ideas for new direction in addressing <br /> children's experiences.See attached sheet for listing of ideas. <br /> New Business: <br /> • May Principal report was given. Tim Souza did a great job with Countdown to Kindergarten <br /> parent evening as well as Karen Tessicini with Step Up to Gracie One parent information evening. <br /> Elaine also acknowledged the PTO and the Staff Appreciation Luncheon,Birds of Prey,and fire <br /> truck visit. <br /> • Flag Day update given by Kathy Penney. Parents were sent"save the date"letters and have been <br /> encouraged to wear their uniforms if they are members of the military. Chief Baker will bring the <br /> fire engine with the big flag. Mrs.Penney commented that they have been unable to get veterans <br /> to attend activities. She also said students have a lot of fun preparing and performing this event <br /> and learn so much. <br /> • Assistant Principal,Wendy Lithwin gave update on Countdown to Kindergarten events. The Big <br /> Playground Visit taking place on June S and two more preschools have been scheduled to visit <br /> kindergarten classes. <br /> • Attendance on Math Night sparse in comparison to past years <br /> • Currently 105 children registered for kindergarten. Numbers are being closely watched. <br /> • Peer student enrollment has been met in the preschool. It is hoped that more spaces can be <br /> offered. <br /> • Playground update-hoping write grants For some of the money;some of the money will come <br /> from fundraising campaigns;corporate sponsorship will be needed;will be"PTO sponsored" <br /> • PTO hosted a great fundraiser on June 1. Would like to try for a different time of the year next <br /> time. <br /> • Some Staff changes taking place for 2013-2014 school year: <br /> ❖ Jey Smith retiring <br /> Liz Wilber-Kindergarten <br /> ❖ Mary Russell-Grade I <br /> ❖ Jane York-Preschool(part time) <br /> Meeting adjourned at 4:05pm <br />
