I
I
top. The WHOI proposal includes funding to develop and adapt technology for
assessment, and r oniton*ng of the reefs and the estuary. It would be used to
determine the best location for the reefs and the results after they area
created. The 10 acres of reef seed with 24 million oyster spat on shell could result
in 1.2 million adult oysters. The oysters could contain 6 metric tons (NIT) of nitrogen
and the reef system could remove another 6 NIT through deposition and burial of
oyster waste, and de-nitrification. The nitrogen reduction target from the MEP and
TM -NTMDL-N reports for the Popponesset Bay system is 11.4 MT/year. The removal of
12 NIT could result in acceptable total nitrogen (DO and Chlorophyll) measured at
the sentinel station and other station that we sample, and the restoration of water
quality. The oyster population could become self-sustaining if spawns of the
' oysters on the reefs successfully repopulate the bay.
Mashi2ee Wakeb ort
Lake Management Committee working on newsletter for spring circulation.
A draft of the newsletter was passed around for review. (See Ken Bates for draft)
santuit Pond has gone through the second year of solar circulator
remediation and has been working as predicted to reduce algae bloom by half. It
appears the Town will continue with this program. There should no additional cost
associated with program other than routine maintenance.
Water Quality.Tut Program
There has been some correspondence from SMAST.They have sent
spreadsheets of data. It appears to be support data for Dr. Brian Howes next
presentation to the town in larch. Expect to see invoice from the school soon.
Barnstable Countv Coastal Resource CoMMiMg
No report
•
Sewer Committee
No report
Public Access
No report
'IVa era Improvement Plan Dred in
Ken Bates passed around notice of Waquoit dredge for review. The X11 aq oit
Kittle Diver/Great Diver/Entrance Channel dredging was completed on December
9t'and 10 . 3000 cubic yards was removed. The dredge pipe was left on anchor to
protect the wills Work lid beach area. It has been a terrible year for these projects
due to weather. Derr Bates has reached out to Wayne to find out what his schedule
is for the pre-dredge survey for the Popponesset approach channel.
The process of sand sample gabs is ongoing for the Norm Hayes Group. I
has been a challenge to collect these samples in the waluoit Great River/Little
River area because of the icing issues. The collection of sand grabs for the
Popponesset approach channel and the 1916 channel should not be an issue. The
land sample grabs are ongoing this week. The land grabs are all above water so ice
not an issue.
