Page 1 <br /> Board of Selectmen <br /> Minutes <br /> May 22, 1995 <br /> l <br /> Present: Selectman Vaccaro Selectman Costa Selectman Dinizio <br /> Selectman Caffyn, Selectman Mills <br /> Executive Secretary Robert Whrltenour F <br /> Meeting Called to order by Chairman V acc aro at 6:00 p.m. <br /> APPNTS AND HEARINGS:: <br /> Michael Minior re. 1Ashumet-.- nhn' • <br /> Michael Minior,Project Manager of the Installation Restoration Program <br /> was present to update-the Board on the National Guard Bureau's <br /> cleanup program at the Massachusetts Military Reservation. <br /> Mr.Minor was requested by the Board to discuss the plume management <br /> process and health status of Ashumet and John's Pond. <br /> The water quality of the ponds have been tested and will continue to be <br /> monitored. There is no present health threat based upon the testing that <br /> has been conducted over the past two years indicated Mr.Minor. <br /> Thirty-two samples have been taken over the past two years. Volatile <br /> Organic Compounds were found in three of the samples. Mr.Minior f <br /> indicated that the VOC's are a common laboratory contaminant. It was <br /> noted that VOC's were not detected in the plume entering John's Pond. <br /> When asked of the plume interaction with the pond,Mr. Minior indicated i <br /> P Po <br /> that the plume is discharging into the pond. No pesticides or PCB's have <br /> been found in the pond. A containment system is currently being designed f `` <br /> to stop the flow of the plume entering into the area of the pond. <br /> The design of the containment system should be completed in early March. <br /> At this time, the construction of the system will go out to bid. When 2 <br /> completed,the containment system should contain all seven plumes r <br /> indicated Mr.Minior. <br /> _t <br /> Mr. Minor indicated that further information may be obtained at the <br /> TEAL meeting on Wednesday, May 24, 1995 at the Morse Pond School <br /> in Falmouth. <br /> It was noted that a draft report of the test results is anticipated to be <br /> released by the end of June. <br /> Selectman Caffyn expressed disappointment that a complete report has <br /> not been available for public review prior to Memorial Day to determine <br /> if it is safe to swim or consume fish in the waters of John's Pond. <br />
