Town of Mashpee <br /> Affirmative Action Committee <br /> Meeting Notes <br /> May 12,Zoo <br /> Present: Chair-Maryanne Wray, Chair-Kay Brown <br /> CALIF To ORDER <br /> The meeting commenced at 5:45 p.m. without a quorum. <br /> A DA IT Ei <br /> Wall Mural,. <br /> Ms. Wray discussed hosting a ceremony honoring Cassie Femandes for her work on the mural and <br /> inviting guests such as Town Manager Joyce Mason, Selectman Liaison Terry Cook,the Affirmative <br /> Action Committee and interested members of the public*, The press would also be invited to publicize <br /> Ills. Fernandes' work. The mural will be on display at the upcoming Special Olympics event on <br /> Saturday, May 29 and will then spend time in the library, senior center and the schools,possibly in <br /> September. V1hile discussing the display, it was suggested that members of the Affirmative Action <br /> Committee be present at the table with the mural at the Special Olympics event. The Committee <br /> members also discussed using the No place for Hate banner at the Special Olympics event to be held at <br /> the high school. <br /> Additional Future leo Place for Hate Activities: <br /> Certification for the ADL must be completed at the enol of the month. Ms. Wray and Ills. Brown <br /> discussed additional activities, such a8 a Silent.Auction. Ms. Wray suggested that the Committee <br /> could � <br /> split the town and invite local businesses to donate goads and/or services in exchange for <br /> p <br /> publicity and sponsorships. Ms. Vaughn has some experience through her work with Special <br /> Olympics. The Committee members will learn more about the Immigrant Celebration picnic from <br /> Gail Wilson, Mashpee Human Services Coordinator, when she attends the next meeting. <br /> Falmouth Affirmative Action To Place for Hate Committee Meeting on April 14: <br /> Ms. Wray attended the April 14 meeting in Falmouth. Since the Committee did not have a quote at <br /> their meeting, George Spivey and Charlie were able to tally to Ms; Wray about their work in F'ahnouth. <br /> Ms. Wray found that with Mr. pivey's unique position in both the town and school system, and his <br /> ability to tune in to the community,has allowed his group to be very proactive. of particular note, lir, <br /> pivey's committee has been proactive in addressing the issue of police prontmg. Following up on <br /> concerns about the perception that police were profiling, Ili`. Spivey worked with the Chief of Police, <br /> who attended a Committee meeting,to develop quarterly reports with arrest statistics based on gender, <br /> race, etc. The reports indicate that profiling is not occurring. Ms. gown expressed interest in <br /> pursuing a similar program in Mashpee as a future progra,rn. The Committee members believe that <br /> there has been some sensitivity training on the issue and does not feel that profiling has been as great <br /> an issue in Mashpee. <br /> Among the other activities sponsored by Mr. pivey's groups, a neighborhood cleanup was <br /> particularly articular) successful. volunteers assisted neighbors with cleaning up their yards and the DPW <br /> scheduled a special pickup. The group has installed a handicap accessible playground and set up a <br /> said summer recreation program which sponsors children in need.for the summer activities. The <br /> p <br /> Martin.Luther King Day Breakfast has also become a very successful annual program, <br />
