AFFIRMATIVE ACTION COMMITTEE
MEETING OF MARCH 20, 2407
MASHPEE TOWN HALL
Committee Members present: Janice Rhoden, Vice Chair, and Patrick Duffy. Marilyn
Farren was also present during the meeting.
Meeting convened at 5:30 p.m.
Patrick Duffy advised that Steven Peters, the Chairman, would be taking a job in Newton
and moving to Quincy. He may not be able to continue to serve as a member of the
committee but may still be willing to help out with"No Place for Hate" activities.
No Place for Hate Proclamation
The committee members were pleased to receive the"No Place for Hate" proclamation
from the Selectmen's office mounted on a plaque. They asked if it could be hung in the
front lobby.
Human Rights Representative
Louise Patrick met with the committee members as the Town's Human Rights
representative at the county level. Louise is also the Town's Human Service
Coordinator. She advised the committee about the multi-cultural event held at the Cape
Cod College. She also mentioned the diversity event coming up at the school on April 5,
Marilyn advised that she received a call from Melissa Hanna who asked if the
Affirmative Action Committee wanted a table for the diversity fair at the R.C. Coombs
school. It would be held on April 5 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p,m. for pre-school aged
children to 2nd graders. While the committee members showed interest, they felt that they
did not have enough time to plan for this event.
Louise said that as a representative through the Human Rights Commission, they wanted
to raise awareness about the committee and that they would want to know that Mashpee
has re-certified as a"No Place for Hate" community. The Human Rights Commission
has seven members and thirteen appointed members from the various towns. The
representatives would share information from the Human Rights Commission, and they
need awareness that there is a commission. Some of the goals of the commission were
discussed. One of the goals was to work with"No Place For Hate" communities. She
said that they would also deal with specific complaints about discrimination or any sort of
human rights violation. Janet referenced the community assessment survey that would
help to identify the types of issues in Mashpee.
Louise advised that another forthcoming event is scheduled at Camp Lyndon on April 4
through the Human Rights Academy for the high school kids. It starts at 8:30 a.m.
Louise mentioned that the Human Rights Commission was interested in doing fund-
raising. Janice commented that may interfere with any fund-raising that committee may
plan. Louise mentioned that Vincent de Paul at the Christ the King church is wonderful
