Don MacDonald, who regularly reports as a liaison on this location, added that he had received
correspondence from residents on the Lake who claimed that there were still many infractions taking
place. Don enumerated several of the particular infractions they cited, which were unknown to Al.
Al told Don that if the local residents see apparent violations to please call him on his cell phone and he
will immediately respond. Al also noted that he would be available to attend any association meetings
for lake residents to share information. Al emphasized that his resources are naturally limited and his
challenge is to allocate available resources in the most effective manner. He added that more assistance
from the Environmental Police would be helpful, but their resources are limited as well.
The discussion also mentioned motor speeds on the Lake and how a 50HP limit would impact residents.
Don stated that a HP limitation would be problematic and would meet resistance for shore residents.
Ken asked Don MacDonald to collect additional information from his sources that may fortify
compliance and to review how cameras are being deployed at other ramp sites on the Cape to bolster
safety compliance.
John's mond: Al reported compliance on this waterway had improved over the recent past.
DNR Director/Shellfish Constable Report:
Rick York reported that the shellfish activities are overall very busy and that there is a staffing shortage
at this time of the year. He is trying to fill any existing authorized vacancies. He noted that the college
students and Americorp staff are gone and adjustments are being made to cope with the workload. He
then asked Ashley to provide her report.
Shellfish Constable Update: Ashley Fisher gave the following report:
The shellfish division continues to propagate the remainder of our 10 million quahog seed, and will start
seeding them in the town's family and commercial shellfish areas in mid-October.
Gear construction continued throughout the month of August into September,we will be finalizing our
5t" FLUPSY soon. After completion all large propagation gear will be ready for the 2019 propagation
season.
The oyster growing season in the Mashpee River has been better than previous years because of the
influx of great algae in the water column, and successful sets that were purchased from the Aquaculture
Research Cooperation hatchery in Dennis. Each remote set bag was estimated to contain 1,000 plus
oysters, and the town ordered 2000 bags=2 million oysters.
Scallop season will be starting October 1st in Waquoit, and we are expecting this year to be better than
the previous year due to Falmouth's seeding program.
There has been an increase in shellfish patrols in both family and commercial areas within town,as well
as patrol over our grant holders leased areas in the town's waterways. Grant compliance continues to
be a vital portion of shellfish patrols for both navigation and public safety.
The department's Carolina Skiff in Popponesset Bay was pulled for maintenance, the 30 HP engine will
be replaced for the upcoming oyster season starting November 11.
