Mashpee Environmental oversight Committee <br /> Minutes of Meeting <br /> May 9, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. <br /> Mashpee Town Hall, waquoit Meeting Room <br /> Present: Chairman George Petersen, Selectman John Cahalane, Ted 'Theis, Michael <br /> Talbot <br /> Absent: Rick York,Peter white <br /> CALL To ORDER <br /> The meeting was opened by Chairman Petersen at 7:00 p,m. <br /> APPROVAL of ME TNG MATES March 1 , 201 <br /> n made a motion to approve the minutes o March 1 2013 regular <br /> selectman �ahala a g � <br /> session. Chairman Petersen seconded the motion. All voted unanimously. <br /> COMMUNICATIONS <br /> Where was no public comment. <br /> NEW BUSINESS <br /> Pollinator Garden Project <br /> Mr. Talbot reported that Arnerlcorps would be assisting Mashpee with planting dive pollinator <br /> gardens at three different sites from May 20 to May 2 . Mr. Talbot distributed plans for two of <br /> the gardens located at the Community Garden. The other two sites include J hu Fond and the <br /> Pickerel Cove recreation area. The gardens would be demonstration projects, with the <br /> conservation areas featuring native plants and the community garden featuring a garden of native <br /> species as well as non-native appropriate plants. The gardens will be implemented to encourage <br /> people to convert their lawns and gardens and provide habitat for wildlife and native pollinators. <br /> The project will.be completed with donations and grant funds and anyone interested in helping <br /> could contact Conservation Agent Drew McManus. Thirty Arneric rps volunteers were <br /> expected to assist the Town of Ma' shpee with projects located throughout the Town, such as the <br /> shellfish project and kiosk building. The week of volunteer efforts will be concluded with a <br /> celebration on Saturday. <br /> ACTION UEMS UPDATE <br /> Estuary estoration Shelifi h Propagation <br /> Funds in the amount of$95,000 had been approved for the shellfish project. <br /> Pond water Quality <br /> Mr. Talbot stated that George Reichenbacher would be returning from Florida.to continue his <br /> volunteer sampling efforts. <br /> Phosphorus Management for Fresh Water Ponds <br /> Mr. Talbot referenced Falmouth's nitrogen bylaw that has been passu by both the Board of <br /> Selectmen and town residents. The bylaw would limit the use of nitrogen fertilizer on lawns <br /> because lawn fertilizers were responsible for contributing 12-15%of the loading occurring in <br /> opponesset and Waquoit Bay, making it the#2 contributor. Mr. Talbot noted that the Mate had <br /> passed regulations limiting phosphorus in fertilisers, adding that nitrogen was less of a concern <br />
