Mashpee Environmental Oversight Committee <br /> Minutes of Meeting <br /> August 8,2013 at 7:00 p. . <br /> Mashpee Town Hall, Popponesset fleeting Room <br /> Present; Chairman George Petersen,'Ted Theis,Rick York, Michael 'Talbot <br /> Absent: Selectman John Cahalane.9 Peter White <br /> CALL TO ORDER <br /> The meeting was opened by Chairman Petersen. <br /> APPROVAL OF METINGTES June 135 2013 &July 11, 2013 <br /> Approval of the July 11 minutes would be held until Mr. Talbot and Mr. York's revisions were <br /> incorporated. <br /> Mr. Theis made a motion to approve the minutes of June 13th. Mr. Talbot seconded the <br /> motion. 3 yes, 1 abstain <br /> COMMUNICATIONS <br /> Chairman Petersen announced that NOAA held a lecture regarding sea level rise and the new <br /> flood naps_ Mr. Theis inquired whether there had been discussion about the science and the <br /> Chair did note that much of the correspondence had been based on trends and that last year had <br /> been one of the I&warmest years in the last 300 years. <br /> NEW BUSINESS <br /> None at this time <br /> ACTION ITEMS UPDATE <br /> Estuary Restoration/Shellfish Propagation <br /> Chairman Petersen announced that funds had been made available from the CPC for the Estuary <br /> Restoration/ Shellfish Propagation program. Mr. York confirmed that his application had been <br /> approved for$114,000 for the second year of the Shellfish&Estuary Restoration project, <br /> allowing for seeding at an intense level for the next two years. It was hoped that, once a lame <br /> number of quahogs was placed in the Great River and Jehu Pond area,they would begin <br /> spawning and seeding themselves_ Jar. York did Mate that oyster seeding would need to <br /> continue in Mashpee River due to the mucky habitat and higher flushing rate. Mr. York added <br /> that oyster seeding was not expensive compared to the 20 million quahogs needed in Little and <br /> Great River, where they were expected to spawn. Mr. York reported that the 6 million quahog <br /> seed in the 'down facility at Little River were doing well and 2,200 bags of oyster seed in the <br /> Mashpee River were also doing very well. <br /> Pond 'Vater Quality <br /> Mr. York reported that the circulators on Santuit Pond were working well. However, the rain in <br /> June created an algae concentration at the Town landing, appearing in Mate counts at a level high <br /> enough to require that a warning be issued. Mr. York confirmed that the overall condition of the <br /> pond was comparable to the previous year, adding that weekly Secchi readings averaged 1 meter <br /> throughout the pond. Mr. York stag that, last year,there were no floating algae but that, in <br /> June, there was some arae in the area of the landing though it had cleared. Additionally, the <br /> species that appeared this year was a.nabena, another blue-green algae, rather than the <br />
