■
requested for acquisition concerns any of the 11 ash ee Wildlife Refuge. Jeri Smith asked Mr.
Green whether the Tribe could change its mind and go after portions of the wildlife refuge. Mr.
Green stated that one of the properties, Parcel 8, happens to exist within the realm of the .
Refuge, but that it was never a part of the Refuge. So that will be asked for, and is one of the
parcels the Tribe would include in the Trust. Other than that, there are no parcels within the
Refuge that the Tribe is looking at right noir.
.Jeri Smith stated that the charge of the South Cape Beach State Park Advisory Committee is to
protect that piece of lard it was entrusted to supervise, and the Committee wanted to go on
record, via letter to the State reps, how we stood about this without offending anyone. The letter
was worded carefully so as not to offend anyone.
IIIb. Green stated that the State is going to have to talk to the Tribe at some point. The State
has no powers to control the Tribe if it wanted to go forward, if the Tribe wanted to take a piece
of property. Unlike votes of the town, the state, the country, the Tribal vote is by concensus. It
takes one vote to stop that process from going forward. Mr. Green stated again that he signed
the DOU document to protect these lands forever, to provide a place where Wannpenoags and
other people could practice traditional histories, In a place where his grandchildren and his
grandchildren's grandchildren will be able.to go to see something of what our people had.
Robert Lancaster asked Mr. Green what action the Tribe would take if the Tribe perceives that
this land is not being properly managed and is going downhill: would the Tribe thea think about
stepping in and taking over? Mr. Green replied that if he saw it was deteriorating, and the Tribe
had access to federal fends, he would recommend the Tribe step in and take action.
Mr. Green started that .John Cahal ne and Don Meyers are the Selectmen team who are i
negotiating the 9 parcels with the Tribe. He recommended that the Committee bring a Tribal
representative into a Committee meeting in order to better understand the intentions of the
Tribe. Mr. Green will check who represents the Tribe and will get back to Teri Smith by phone '
with a name and contact number.
NEXT MEETING
The nett meeting date is TBD re: availability of the Tribal Council representative. The meeting
was adjourned at 7-.10 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
t
Ina G. S obohrn
kecordi Secretary
