Bill Martiros asked the question as to why this is not the right time to discuss the State Park issue.
Joyce Mason responded that Town Counsel's feeling is that the Martiros letter might set a tone
that would get the discussions off on the wrong foot, regarding South Cape State Beach, and that
the Town might lose control of the discussion. The feeling is that the best way is to take a
measured approach through negotiations by both parties.
Joyce Mason explained that the Tribe is looking at land that is on the tax:rolls right now that is
open land in the Town of Mashpee, not conservation land. The feeling is that the first negotiation
meeting will probably clarify more specifically what land the Tribe is interested in.
Bob Lancaster commented that this is a three-town issue. There is land in Barnstable and
Falmouth that is open space, as well as Mashpee.
Carey Murphy suggested that perhaps the Martiros letter could best be utilized by addressing it to
the Board of Selectmen, re-writing the letter and stating this Committee's position on the issue of
the South Cape Beach State Park. The Committee agreed that this was a good way to utilize the
letter at this point in time.
Carey Murphy commented that the federal recognition of the Wampanoag Tribe is a golden
opportunity for the Tribe to recognize that although there have been issues in the past, this might
be a good time to say that they want to be a part of the community, and bury the old differences.
,lack Cramer added that one step toward accomplishing
this would be for the Tribe to broaden its political presence and influence in the Town.
The next formal committee meeting will convene on Tuesday, July 18, 2006, 6:00 PM at Town
Hall.
Respectfully submitted,
InaL
G.
