Shelish Aquaculture License Application: Ockway Bay Joe and Lisa Bohnenberger
Joe and Lisa Bohnenberger(103 River Road, Mashpee) would like to apply for a
1.1 acre grant in Ockway Bay on the west side of Daniel's Island (seen in figure 2
attached). Fisher helped Bohnenberger in identifying a possible growing area that had
adequate flow and that didn't imped the local boat traffic. The area chosen also does not
currently support a sustainable stock of shellfish, and it is a historic site where oysters
once grew. He hopes the grant will be a family affair between him,his wife, and his two
sons in the fature. They will be using both floating and bottom gear on the proposed grant
site. The grant will help to reduce the nitrogen in Ockway Bay. The waterways
commission approved the application moving forward with added navigational markers
located at lengths closest to the Ockway and Popponesset channels (see application) to
ensure the grant is easy to identify from a boat underway.
Committee Questions:
Holmes: " Are there any shellfish in the area?"
Bohnenberger: "There are no resources away from the shore, the bottom
is thick muck".
Fisher: "The Division of Marine Fisheries conducts a site survey prior
to issuing a shellfish aquaculture license. At this time someone will come
out and do a stock assessment for any shellfish in the area."
Marques: " The area close to shore is productive, but that is not where the
proposed grant was mapped."
Holmes: " Will all gear on the grant be accessed by boat?"
Bohnenberger: " Yes,the grant will be worked with a skiff primarily. All
product will be offloaded at either the Ockway or Mashpee Neck town
landing"
Fisher(Comment): " The Waterways Commission approved the grant moving
forward as long as two additional marker buoys were added to ensure that boat
traffic will be able to see the grant when traveling the Popponesset and Ockway
channels.
Bohnenberger: " Thank you all for your advice and cooperation through this
process".
Motion: Marques moved to support the oyster grant application moving forward.
Holmes seconded the motion. All voted unanimously in favor.
