Skel-sh Aquaculture License area expansion:Hamblin Pond/bark Burtis and Chris
Burtis:
Mark and Chris Burtis presented their grant expansion area in Hamblin Pond.
They are currently permitted though the town to grow shellfish on a 1 acre grant in
Hamblin Pond, and they are proposing to increase the grant to a 7 acre parcel in the
immediate vicinity of the existing grant(as shown in figure 1 attached). The area in
Hamblin Pond was surveyed for navigation and a parcel was chosen with the amount of
acreage they could achieve without impeding on local boat traffic. The waterways
commission approved the application moving forward with added navigational markers
located at lengths B, E, D, and A (see application) to ensure the grant is easy to identify
from a boat underway.
Committee Questions:
Holmes: " Trays have washed up on other grants in Falmouth. How will
you secure your gear?"
Burtis: " We will use screw anchors and/or large
mushroom anchors along with secure line attachments for our
floating bags."
Marques: "How far back does the much go toward the island?"
Burtis: The muck is more than a foot deep in areas. Our grant as
outlined doesn't go to the landward side of the island where there
is some sandy areas.
Holmes: Where will you overwinter your product?"
Burtis:"We have access to a commercial cooling at the Little River
Boatyard. We also have two slips that we can offload our product.
We have thought of putting them on the bottom or in the ground in
a moist environment. This has been done in other areas."
Fisher: " With access to a cooler the oysters can be deposited for
the winter and covered with moist burlap to prevent desiccation.
Some growers have seen at least a 90% survival rate by doing this.
Oysters are quite hardy"
Motion: Marques moved to support the oyster grant expansion application moving
forward. Holmes seconded the motion, and added that the Burtis family has done a great
job thus far to accommodate for boat traffic and grant markers. All voted unanimously in
favor.
