Old Business:
Shellfish Commission Vacancy 7:30 pm Interviews:
James Reiffarth: No show
Richard Klein: No show
Darrly Christensen:
Why are you interested in joining the Shellfish Commission?
I enjoying clamming and ostyering in the town. I am interested in the
town's propagation program and I would love to contribute.
What experience do you have in shellfish propagation?
I was involved in research on oyster spat collection and larval distribution.
Are you familiar with the town's Comprehensive Watershed Nitrogen
Management plan?
I am only familiar with the general plan, and how the town is trying to
clean up the water by using shellfish.
Are you familiar with the town's Shellfish Regulations?
Yes, I currently have my recreational shellfish permit. I am also familiar
with the town's waterways and where quahogs and oysters are currently
seeded for growth outside of a nursery setting. I enjoy that the town keeps
family and commercial areas separate, I believe this reduces conflict in the
area. The town does a great job seeding shellfish for the family permit
holders.
Motion: Holmes made a motion to recommend Darryl Christensen to the Shellfish
Commission upon approval from the selectman. He also added that Darryl has been an
asset to the committee in the past when looking into public access points on the
waterfront. Motion seconded by Marques. All voted unanimously in favor.
COWMP Revised shellfish seeding plan for 2019 due to reduced funding: Update and
Vote:
Shellfish Constable Ashley Fisher reported that—2 mm seed should be purchased
for the upcoming growing season. Fifty percent survival was not achieved in 2018 when
small (500 micron) quahog seed was purchased, and therefore it was not cost effective to
purchase that same size in 2019. The shellfish division seeded 3 million of its 10 million
seed purchased in 2018. There was only a 3 0% survival seen for the small seed
purchased. In 2019, Ashley Fisher explained, we will order R 1.5 seed. That means the
seed is retained on 1.5 millimeter mesh and is approximately 2 millimeters in shell
length/width.
Motion: Marques made a motion to accept the CWNMP Revised shellfish seeding plan
for 2019. Holmes seconded the motion. All voted unanimously in favor.
