i
i
These funds are used to offset the cost to provide care for those who do not have insurance
coverage.
Mr. Tamasi stated that there is a disproportionate emphasis on young people as opposed to the
elderly population. The Gosnold Family Department has 5 trained Interventionists who will sit with
concerned family members to strategize about how best to intervene and get the individual help.
This strategy is helpful % of the time, and is more effective than family members getting a court
order. Mr. Tamasi stated that the worst approach is to obtain a court order to intervene when seniors
are resistant to getting help.
Mr. Tamasi stated that Psychiatry is the most significant gap in available care on Cape Cod.
Gosnold does not routinely rake direct appointments with psychiatrists. A patient would need to
see a therapist first, who would thea assess the patient and make a recommendation mendation as to whether
or not the patient should see a psychiatrist. Psychiatrists prescribe medications, not therapy.
Mr. Tamasi i described a collaborative effort with the police using anti-craving medication for people
corning out of incarceration, which blocks receptors in the brain. The inmates get the first shot when
they are released, and then come to Gosnold for the second shot and try to engage therm in other
programs. It has proved to be quite successful. The neuroscience in the last 5 to 8 years has
shown much greater detail as to how these drugs work and in what specific areas of the brain they
do their damage.
Mr. Tamasi will send Gail Wilson a supply of brochures providing information about programs and
services offered by Gosnold.
• Review of Updated Human Services Brochure
Gail Wilson passed around an updated draft of the brochure that she, Lynne Waterman and Janice
Walford have been working on, and asked for comments from the oommitt e members. Ruth Elias
asked how the best way would be to distribute the brochure to reach the most number of persons.
Janice Walford recommended mended that when we have a volunteer who is good with a computer and can
input data, we have the brochure put onto the computer so that it will be easy to pant in the future
and make any changes to the format online. Gall Wilson stated that Sue at the Falmouth Human
Services office would print up the brochure for the commiffee, for final review for the Committee
members before going to print. Gail Wilson will get a cost estimate for the service.
• Filing Cabinet seed. Gail Wilson requested approval for purchase of a filing cabinet for her
office. The Committee approved use of the Human Services line item budget for office
expense for the cabinet.
• Senior Property Tax Workoff. Lynne Waterman reported that the former Senior Tax
Abatement program has been renamed the Senior Property Tac Work Off Program. Ms.
Waterman stated that the 30 positions authorized last August for the program that runs from
Oct.'s to the end of September, had been filled. The Town Manager authorized another
position with the caveat that the person would be able to work the full 75 hours required from
August 5, 2013 through the end of September 2013. The new program will start up October
19 2013, with slots for 35 volunteers, with applications received by Oct. 31't. As much a
possible: the assignments will be made on a departmental rotating basis, but discretion will
be given to Lynne Waterman for assignments. [Ills. Waterman suggested that Gail Wilson
might want to put in a request for a second volunteer for an entirely different job description.
The number of authorized volunteer positions at this time is 3 , unless changed by the 1305.
3
