Mr. Bates saw no
navigation issues with the proposed plan. Mr. Barton confirmed with the Mr. Bohnenberger that he was
aware on the necessary precautions for handling and cooling of the shellfish to prevent contamination.
A motion was made by Tim Leedham, seconded by Don Barton, that the Bohnenberger grant application
be approved by the Waterways Commission as there are no navigational concerns. The proposed
grant site in Hamblin Pond, which includes a floating barge and shed, would expand from 1 to 7 acres in
scope. Mark said he felt the oyster farming operation would be successful, that his son would be
involved making it a family venture, and that nitrogen reduction could be expected as a consequence.
He stated that access to the conservancy land would not be blocked.
Mr.York and Ms. Fisher spoke very positively about the project as did other members of the
Commission, including Al Wickel who was listening to the proceedings.
Mr. Barton, however, commented that he felt this expansion and the area cordoned off by mooring balls
is a claim of overreach and demand on the waterway. For homeowners and residents, from all
directions, the fields of floating gear and cages would significantly impact and alter the aesthetic and
traditional view of Hamblin Pond. He felt the access to the conservancy land surrounded by the floating
gear fields would certainly inhibit access to those shores for visitors by boat or sail. If approved by the
