GENIAL.DISCUSSION. The committee discussed a number of access issues affecting the disabled in l is hpee. For example,the lack of an automatic door and the cobblestones at the entrance to Town Hall make it very difficult for a wheelchair user to enter. (not to mention there is only one handicap parking space). A discussion of handicapped parking in llashpee highlighted the fact that most spaces provide insufficient space for wheelchair users. In fact, Bill mentioned he often parks at the far end of lots in order to be able to maneuver his wheelchair around his vehicle. Another general comment concerned the dangerous state of many of the curt cuts in llashpee Commons. Additionally, Bob pointed out there is no curb cut allowing access from the spaces behind Ann Taylor to the sidewalk without having to walk in the road. Russ said he welcomed such comments and would be glad to look into specific examples. Accessibility of new construction of public buildings was also the topic of brief discussion. It was suggested that a new or remodeled building be "wheelchair tested before occupancy permits are issued. Russ thought this would be a good idea but that any such"test" be conducted a bit earlier in the process in order to provide the builder sufficient time to incorporate necessary adjustments. The committee also discussed obtaining ADA-related documents for reference by members. Bob offered to look into obtaining pertinent references.prior to the net meeting.
