The Town Manager expressed to the chair that he keeps things going and expressed his deepest
condolences and knows the chair will carry on this passion about access for the disabled,
Michelle stated she will be leaving the committee due to the fact she is moving to Nantucket. She will be
sending a letter of resignation to the Board-of Selectmen.
What is the role of the Design Review and Plan Review committees relating to handicapped
access?
Mike Mendoza said he is chair of both committees, Design Review tapes a look at the appearance of the
building, colors, the look, etc. Appearance and signage is the job of Design review. Plan review deals
with catch basinsF entrances,.clearances, use, parking, everything with the site, and everything inside the
building, This is where we address the ADA requirements and we talk about signage. There was a-
discussion on the Planning Board, the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Cape Cod commission's
responsibilities.
The Chair asked about the new construction at Ma hpee commons where they are building multiple use
housing and was concerned with the slope going up the hill from the commons to the units. I t was noted
they may have regraded the slope.
AAB
The Chair seat info on the updating of the ADA Title 2 requirements that apply to municipal buildings and
schools. Mr. Mendoza stated AAB is no lamer part of public safety. They have been relocated to DPLF
Department of Public Licensing, which happened in March of this year. They are trying to get
accustomed to their new location. The governor moved them out of one agency to another which is
basically consumer affairs.
Recommendations
Michael Mendoza stated there are homeowners who aro looking for help with handicap ramps. Maybe
the committee should be reaching out to the building community finding contractors who are willing to
help. He suggested creating a list of people who are willing to help. If we could have some direction for
these people who need help and start getting names of people willing to help. This may be a good thing
for this committee to work on. Maybe put a booklet together of resources. This would be a good
project. If the purpose of ADA is to help the community this would be good. Some suggestions were to
use the prisoners F local contractors, a ndlor vocational schools. Mr. Davis stated he would be willing to go
to the local-Mores to see if he could develop a list of contractors who would be willing to help.
Another suggestion was to put information out in the community newspaper asking if there are any
contractors interested. Mr, Mendoza suggested coring up with guidelines for people who would be in
need. it was also suggested inviting Gail Wilson, Human I esou rces Director, into one of our meetings
because she may have other contacts and suggestions.
Mr. Davis asked about using money from the fines received from people illegally parking in handicap
spaces. The chair said this is something we would have to take to town meeting to accept the provisions
of Mass General Laws. It was suggested developing a list of towns on the cape and what they have
done.
Appointments and Reappointments
The Chair stated the appointments and reappointments-are corning up next month. He will put in for the
reappointment of tine-people now on the board except for three vacancies. It was suggested advertising
in the newspaper and posting at these housing units for 55 and over. Mr. Mendoza suggested checking
on what the makeup of the committee is and the chair said he would check on the Mass General
Law, Michele stated she will ask if the new SPED director for the high school would be interested.
