He added that this has been de er -fined as the most <br /> suitable location to grow oysters. <br /> Evelyn Webb voiced support of the proposal as dict Betty Nichols. <br /> Waterways Commission members,Jim Hanks and Ben Gordon were <br /> present to discuss the proposal as outlined to grow oysters in Popponesset <br /> Bay, north of Kittle Thatch Island. <br /> The waterways Commission is not opposed to aquaculture, but no group <br /> or individual should have exclusive rights or a part of the Bay stated Mr. <br /> Hanks'n concern for the sharing of all waterways. <br /> Mr. Gordon presented a map to the Board, and interested public depicting <br /> the recent dredging, The Tribal Council has proposed to use a large section <br /> of the best and prune boating waters in Popponesset Bay explained lair. <br /> Gordon. <br /> In addition, the waterways Cor rmssion suggested the plan work in <br /> concert with the local Comprehensive Plan, and further evaluate other <br /> waters for grant activities in lieu of a prime recreational boating area. <br /> Perry Ellis,Harbormaster agreed that the area as proposed for the Shellfish <br /> Grant is highly used, and unprotected. He suggested the Tribal Council <br /> seek an alternate location for the propagation of oysters. <br /> Richard York, Shellfish Constable indicated that the area meets the criteria <br /> for the Shellfish Grant. The Shellfish Conunission has approved of the <br /> proposal with the stipulation that weight nets with sand bags and nylon <br /> tubing be used to anchor the propagation area. <br /> The proposal will create 100 job opportunities to help reduce the unemploy- <br /> ment rate,and increase shellfishi g for commercial and public use explained <br /> Mr. York in favor of the proposal. <br /> Len Pocknett.stated that the grant will benefit the Town of lashpee by <br /> using aquaculture as a method of economic development, and will not deter <br /> the majority of citizens using the waters for recreational urpses. <br />
