Page <br /> Board of Selectmen <br /> Minutes <br /> April 7, 1997 <br /> APP I NTS.AND H A MS; <br /> Public Hearing- shellfish Qont: <br /> Selectman Costa opened the Public Hearing on the request of the <br /> Mashpee Wampanoag Indian Tribal Council to renew the 4.6 acre <br />} <br /> Shellfish Grant at Punkhorn Point in Popponesset Bay, and open <br /> new 8 acre Shellfish Grant, north of Little Thatch Island in Popponesset <br /> Bay. <br /> Mr. Whritenour read aloud the Public Hearing notice as published. <br /> Correspondence was received from the Tribal Council dated February <br /> 10, 1997, and Mashpee Waterways Commission dated April 7, 1997 <br /> with regards to this matter. (enclosed) <br /> Glenn Marshall, a member of the Board of Director,Mashpee Wampano g <br /> Indian Tribal Council addressed the new Shellfish Grant proposal. <br /> Mr. Marshall indicated that the existing grant can only be utilized as <br /> nursery area as a result of high nitrogen, and fecal coliform counts. The <br /> new site as proposed will be used for propagation of oysters. <br /> The area is a readily acceptable site with the Division of Marine Fisheries, <br /> and will create increased job opportunities, and bring the Bay back to <br /> r the fish levels of years past informed Mr. Marshall, <br /> Selectman Costa opened the Public Hearing to obtain comment. <br /> Michael Collins,Fisheries Coordinator for the Cape Cod Economic <br /> { Development Council presented a check to the Town in the amount of <br /> $9,000 to conduct the grant program. <br /> Mr. Collins indicated that the program will encourage and sustain natural <br /> and traditional economic development on the Cape. Understanding the <br /> conflicting issues with aquaculture, Mr. Collins stated that he is confident <br /> that all issues will be constructively overcome, and become an eventual <br /> benefit to all. <br /> Vern Pocknett, a Cape fisherman stated that he is familiar with the history <br /> of Popponeset Bay. The shallow grater necessary to propagate oysters <br /> ill not interfere or pose a danger to navigation, As a member of the Tribal <br /> Council, vire want to be number one on the list in the field aquaculture stated <br /> Mr. Pocknett in support, <br /> Tribal Council Co rrfissioner, Maurice Fox stated that fishing is a manner <br /> for many area residents earn a living. <br />
