i <br /> The Agent stated Mr. Timothy McNamara has concerns about the ATV activity and has <br /> requested to give a presentation about his possible solutions to conservation lands in his <br /> neighborhood. : <br /> Mr. Timothy McNamara gave a slide show presentation on the ATV intrusion on John's <br /> Pond in the area of Shorewood Drive where he owns property. He has been trying to <br /> clean up the area, Shorewood Drive ends and turns into the conservation paths. In the <br /> slide shag he showed the relevant areas that are being disturbed by the ATVs. He <br /> identified the access points at the entrance ofJohn's Pond parking lot and via the.bog <br /> network south of Ashumet Road. He stated he calls the police but they cannot respond <br /> in time. Barriers have been put up by DPW in places but they declined to install them on <br /> the Shorewood entrance and a private contractor attempted to put up a barrier but was <br /> also denied. The Fire Department says they need access at tires. He stated full size <br /> trucks are going thru there as well as the ATVs. He noted Southport is becoming more <br /> active. He showed a slide where the trees are being damaged by the activity of the <br /> ATVs. He pointed out all of the neighbors have the same experience from the noise and <br /> the ATVs whizzing by. He suggested an area where a barrier could be placed along <br /> with rods. He suggested placing pedestrian friendly harrier at the end of Shorewood <br /> Drive and a fire department access gate. The Chair said we need to identify all of the <br /> access points and decide how we are going to block these access points. The Agent <br /> said once the ATVs get in there, police vehicles cannot get in to catch them. It takes a <br /> community acid a neighborhood watch and adding police enforcement. fir. McNamara <br /> arriara <br /> stated he Relieves some of the ATVs are co'r'ing from the neighborhood. He suggested <br /> putting in trash cans and trail signs. The Agent said it is a 'multi-faceted approach. He <br /> suggested organizing a 'meeting with DPW, the Fire Chief, Southport and the neighbors <br /> to discuss what can be done such as putting up harriers, advertising the area, putting up <br /> trail signs and making the area more accessible to visitors. The Agent stated he will be <br /> following up and organizing a meeting. <br /> UPDATE ON HERRING RUNS: <br /> Mashpee--Vegetation trimming along Mill bond herring run for improved access. <br /> There is a lot of overgrowth in the area and this is a project we will be going, in and <br /> clearing it out to make maintenance access a little easier. <br /> Quashnet— fortified roc log weir at bottom of fish ladder to increase water depth <br /> in this area for herring staging. Greg Berman (woods Hole sea Grant) <br /> sedimentation analysis of the fish ladder outlet and associated <br /> Chan eels/em ba nkments. <br /> The Agent described the area of the herring run onJohn's Pond. Greg Berman came in <br /> to view the area to see if the sand is coring in from the Bond or from the sides. All of <br /> the sand is pouring into the channel* The retaining gall needs to be rebuilt} the elevation <br /> needs to be brought up, and the sand needs to be graded back. on the downside, the <br /> embankment is eroding and is restricting -fish passage. Catherine Laurent, DPW <br /> Director, and I will be seeking funds for a hydrologic study on the fish ladder. <br /> santuit — ATS' damage to bottom pool area.
