$ DEPARTMENT OF THE AIR FORCE
gEADQUAg'TERS AIR FORCE CENTER FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EXCELLENCE
INSTALLATION RESTORATION PROGRAM
OTTS AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE,MA 02542-5028
EIGHBOR1100D NOTICE
August 14, 1997
The Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE) has discovered the
chemical ethylene dibromide (EDB) in ground and surface water in the northern area
of the Quashnet River in Mashpee. The attached news release provides all the
information available to date. I've also enclosed a fact sheet on EDB.
As a precaution, AFCEE is providing bottle' water in your neighborhood and would
like to collect a sample from your private well. We recommend using the bottled
water for drinking and cooking until we can test your private well. When we collect
a sample from your well it will be tested for ADB. If we collect a sample today or
tomorrow, results should be available on Monday. We will let you know of the
results by telephone or ahand-delivered notice. We will also send you a copy of the
test report in the mail within the nett few weeks. If we are not able to collect a
sample today or tomorrow then we will arrange to collect one at your earliest
convenience.
Bottled water will be provided to you until we determine the qualify of your water.
At that time, a decision will be made in consultation with regulatory and public
health agencies as to future provision of bottled water and private well testing.
We appreciate your patience in this matter as we work quickly to better understand
the situation in the area. If you have questions about scheduling private well testing
or bottled water delivery then please call Kathy Collins at Jacobs Engineering
Group on base, 508-564-6192, ext. 235. If you have questions about the status of
then please call Doug Karson at AFCEE, 508-
the investigation,., test results, etc.,
968-4678,, ext. 2.
_. _
