Selectman Frye, Selectman Marsters, Selectman Caffyn, Selectman Dinizio
Executive Secretary Robert Whritenour
Assistant to the Executive Secretary Joyce Mason
Absent: Selectman Costa
Meeting Called,to by Chairman Costa at 6:30 p.m.
Town Hall, Meeting Room#1.
The Board of Selectmen held a public meeting for the purpose of
discussing the J. Braden Thompson Plume and MMR Plume Response
Program. William Fisher of Woodard&Curran and representatives
from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and
Massachusetts Military Reservation(MMR) were present to discuss
their findings. Approximately thirty interested citizens attended the
hearing.
J. n Th mpson Plume•
.,.. •
The J. Braden Thompson Plume emanating from an inactive junkyard
located in the Town of Sandwich is presently migrating in a southeast
direction towards MashpeelWakeby Pond informed Gerard Martin, a
State Department of Environmental Protection official.
Remedial assessment and investigation has indicated that the plume
is presently approximately 5,550 feet long, 350 feet wide, and 150 feet
thick. The levels of pollution consist of disposed drums, storage
tanks, and scrap metals from a former garage and junkyard informed
. Martin.
Monitoring wells have been installed to delineate the vertical and horizontal
extent of the plume to finalize the design for the proposed groundwater
treatment system.
It was noted that seven residential homes in the area presently use private
wells. The remainder are hooked up to town water. The wells continue to
meet drinking level standards indicated Mr.Martin who noted that wells
are sampled on a quarterly basis.
The maximum contaminant level standard for safe drinking water is
.05 parts per billion. (ppb)
Monitoring wells placed near Mashpee/Wakeby Pond in the area of
Pickerel Cove contain 3400 ppb of tetrachloroethane. A few hundred
feet upgradient near Cove Road,2000 ppb of the chemical was detected.
The plume is much deeper and higher in concentration than what was
previously thought informed Mr. Martin. It was noted that all monitoring
wells detected MTBE, a gasoline additive that may be attributed to
boating use.
