JBT continued
PAGE •
QQN AMINANT S
In addition to groundwater samples, DEP collected ten surface water samples from the
Mashpee-Wakeby Pond. One of the samples contained chlorinated solvents. One sample
collected immediately above the pond bottom contained 5.7 ugll of PCE, 2.1 ug/1 of
1,1,2,2-TeCA, 1.2 ug/1 of TCE, 0.7 ug/1 of vinyl chloride and lover concentrations of
other related compounds. None of the chlorinated solvents in the surface water ex-
ceeded either the acute or chronic fresh water environmental toxicity value.
All surface water samples contained love concentrations(less than 4 ug/1)of methyl tent
butyl ether(MTBE). MTBE is an additive to gasoline and its presence may be the result
of motor boats in the pond.
CLEANUP ACTIVITIESIPLANS
The installation of monitoring wells at this site ispart of the continuous cleanup efforts
by DEP that are taking place at the JBT site. The wells were collecting information to
complete the design of a groundwater treatment system.
DEP and its contractor-are evaluating the new groundwater data to determine the appro-
priate cleanup technology.A report is due September, 1997. Upon review and approval
of this report, the appropriate treatment system will be put out to bid.
DEP is committed to cleaning up the plume migrating from the J. Braden Thompson
Road Site.
i
For more information, please contact:
Gerard Martin
Actin Section Chief
Acting .;
Site Management&P emutting
(508) 946-2799Ta
•1.
.r
.3
AuVtv 19, 1997
