Page 6 <br /> Board of Selectmen <br /> Minutes <br /> Tune 3, 1995 <br /> C0M]ffiMQATIQN�S AND CORRE.5PQNDEN • <br /> f <br /> Bo HealthIlRdate-re: on' Mill I <br /> Health Agent,Elias McQuaid was present to discuss the status of <br /> of the suspected plume of chemicals emanating from Augat,Inc. <br /> in the water of two homes located on Sampson's Mill Road,Mashpee. <br /> It was noted that Augat,Inc.is an electronic parts manufacturer that <br /> has used trichloroethylene(TCE)in cleaning solvents during the late <br /> 1980's. Prior to the sale of the Augat property, an environmental study <br /> was performed that detected the carcinogen. <br /> i <br /> Mr.McQuaid indicated that Town Health Officials discovered that <br /> hazardous materials had entered the soil around the septic system of <br /> A in 1 1 when the septic stem failed due to the discharge oftj <br /> Augat 99 p y g <br /> oils and greases in the floor drains. <br /> The Board of Health requested instruction from the Department of <br /> Environmental Protection in May of 1991 to facilitate remediation,but <br /> did not receive response informed Mr.McQuaid. <br /> The Department of Environmental Protection(DEP)notified Augat <br /> of the findings and issued a notice of responsibility. Augat had 60 days <br /> to hire a specialist to develop a remediation plan indicated Mr.McQuaid. <br /> When DEP takes over,it is up to the DEP to make sure the conditions <br /> are complied related Mr.McQuaid who noted that nearby residents were E <br /> not informed of the pollution in January because there was no immediacy. <br /> P� � y <br /> It was noted that ground water moves at the rate of 1.5 feet per day. <br /> It would have taken one(1)year to move 500 feet to reach any private well. <br /> t <br /> Mr.McQuaid indicated that he was informed by Mrs.Evelyn Webb of . <br /> Sampson's Mill Road in 1990 that several area women had miscarried ' <br /> duringregnancy. <br /> P � <br /> It was noted that the Board of Health hand delivered a Public Health <br /> Advisory to all the residents of Sampson's Mill Road and the Cape Drive <br /> area on May 31, 1996. (enclosed) <br /> Health Department has arranged with the Mash ee <br /> The Barnstable bounty Heal p g p <br /> Board of Health to test the suspected wells at no cost to the homeowner. <br /> Mr.McQuaid indicated that Augat installed a water infiltration system <br /> in the O'Gara home located on Sampson's Mills Road. Samples were taken <br /> after filtration. Nothing was detected in the samples informed Mr. <br /> McQuaid who noted that Augat has been very cooperative in the process. <br /> � g ry <br />
