M., SHP IE HISTORIC DISTRICT
The Town of Mashpee established a Local Historic District to be administered by
an Historic District Commission as provided for under Massachusetts General
Laws Chapter 40C as amended. The purpose for such a Local Historic District is
to aid in the preservation and protection of the distinctive characteristics and
architecture of buildings and places significant in the history of the Town of
Mashpee and the maintenance and improvement of their settings.
As a taxpayer with a profound interest in Mashpee's past and present, I hope
that the town-owned area between the Museum to the west and the Town
Archives to the east (the site of the former historic Hotel Attaquin) may be kept
as open space - an extension of Mashpee Community Park and Veterans
Garden.
Solomon Attaquin, descendant of one of Mashpee's earliest recorded residents,
built his dwelling in 1840, which later became the Hotel Attaquin —a welcome
retreat to the many fishermen who travelled to Mashee for its renowned fishing.
Passing through several owners, the Hotel ceased operation in 1955 as a result of
a fire. Until 1893, Attaquin owned the "12 Acre Lot" on the south shore of
Mashpee Pond, across the road from the Hotel. In the early 1900s ballfields were
located on that land, as described and shown in a photo album of the time. In
1946 Mashpee Town Meeting voted to purchase that land and in 1953 voted
the area on the south shore of Mashpee pond be named "Attaquin Park."
The tranquility of a large open area would serve well in our Local Historic District.
Rosemary Burns Love
August 23, 2017
