Mention was also made of the possible creation of a marina on a 10 acre, town
owned property, at the undeveloped end of Great River (Wills Work Road area).
Don Barton voiced objection to that notion, as the site is shallow, and
construction, dredging, and road development would be impactive. It would
render more commercial encroachment on an undisturbed conservation area that
he felt, requires preservation. It has been noted however, that this site might
also offer the Town a much needed upland dredging sediment disposal site.
Again this idea is in very preliminary stages of discussion (thinking outside the
box).
Mr. Barton added that water quality treatment/compliance, for our Town and
estuaries, is well known to be the largest single issue confronting Mashpee tax
payers. The presence of a new marina at that location, in his opinion, would only
compound the environmental dilemma and inflict new pressures and costs on the
restoration of Waquoit Bay. Rick York as well as members of the Commission in
attendance took issue with Mr. Bartons opinion as it was stated by Mr. York and
Mr. Leedham that there is no scientific proof that the number of boats sitting at or
boating from a marina, in any way, negatively impacts water quality. Water
quality issues are statistically impacted primarily by lawn fertilizers run-off, septic
system leaching and highway/roadway runoff, none of which are caused in any
manner by boats. Rick noted that Town leadership has already been proactive in
upgrading and expanding boat handling capacity at the Town's boat ramps.
A motion to adjourn was made by Don McDonald and 2nd by Tim Leedham. The
meeting was adjourned at 11:00 AM. The next meeting is scheduled for
September 12, 2017 @ 9AM in the Popponesset Meeting Room.
Ken Bates-Chairman
Don MacDonald-Vice Chair
Don Barton-Secretary
AI Wickel
Stan Healy
