MASHPEE COMMONS STUDY COMMITTEE
NOVEMBER 14. 1995
Issues and concerns raised at October 25 , 1995 meeting
Item 1 . In 1986 , Fields Point had a vision for Mashpee commons
and the surrounding properties-. With extensive
public comment and input , a Master Plan was created.
Over these past nine years , because of new environmental
awareness and the deteriorated economics of real estate,
The vision, The Master Plan, has been abandoned .
is
Item 2 : As you walk through Mashpee commons today, you will
notice:
1 . The parking areas with little or no attempt to incor-
porate landscaping, making these necessary areas aesthet-
ically unpleasant and environmentally offensive to the
people, the community and the Cape.
2 . The vacant stores , the empty 'Windows
3 . The broken telephone booths-shattered glass, lights
inoperable- the all--encompassing look of minimal up-keep
and maintenance.
The sidewalks that abruptly end nowhere . Try walking
from Purity to the Library-can ' t be done, sidewalks end
at the Medical center .
5 . Be aware that these conditions lead to even worse
conditions
A. the drunks
B. the muggings
C. the vandals
D. the fights
E. the drug dealers
F . the fires
We do not need the blight of the inner cities to establish itself
in the center of Mashpee.
Right now, under current zoning law, Fields Point can build
almost everything they are asking for . The problem is, Fields
Point can' t build as many of everything that they want .
The Solution
Fields Point should finish building the center : the hotel,
the moderately p p priced department store, the landscaping. They should
establish the basic anchors for this important center of Town,
all of which stem from, and are included in the original Master
Plan. This will secure the area, and provide revenue for the
Town. It will furnish employment and security for the residents
and it will give us an opportunity to serve the Tourist Industry.
When this has been accomplished , then come back and tell us what
is desired for the rest of this property.
Where is- and what has happened to the commitment from Fields
Point concerning this particular section of Town? Right now,
Fields Point has given too little and is asking too much.
