FROM PHOt E- NO. P03
P.O. apx 1048 — MA3HPEE, MASSACHUSKTTS 02849
it
Teleph(xTe: (508) 477-0208
FAY,: (508) 477-1218
February 21, 1995
Peter C. Webber, Commissioner
Department'of Environmental Management
100 Cambridge Street
Boston, Mass. 02202
Re; Draft Design Report for Pilgrim Memorial State Park
Dear Comm;:sioner Webber,
1 am writing as President of the Mashpee Wampanoag Indian Tribal Council in response to
Elie Draft Si;hematic Design Ruport prepared by the Halverson Company, Inc. fur changes to the
Pilgrim Me-,noriat Park. I recently met with Jim Bakker of your Staff and was presented a copy of the
report.
As direct descendant of the Wdigenous paaple who inhabited Southeastern MassachusaiLs. and
Cape Cod when the Pilgrims arrived, my people are part of the living legacy of the encounter, We
have our own unique perspective of the history and events wluch unfolded in Plymouth and its
environs ir. the 17th century.
Ax result of my discussion with Jim Bakker and my review of the draft report It i9 cle:u to ma
that the Wampanoag perspective has been marginulixed. The Wampanuags feel strongly that we i
should be an integral part of the process from beginning to end. We agree with you that "it is „
important in all the proposed improvements to the park that the tolling of tho many stories that enter
around Plymouth Rock be conxidered most important".
We are tired of our perspective being Ignored ur distorted by outsiders. Without the
cooperation of our ancestors the Pilgrims and their stories might never have survived. Nuw it is we i
who seek your cooperatiun to bel$insure that our heritage and uur storics survive into the 21st
century. L
We want to be an integral part ur the rooarch,.planning interpretation and development of the
improve is to the Park. We have many qualified people who cuuid satisfy the requirements of the
project, his endeavur provides an excellent opportunity to present both the Pilgrim and the
Wampanoag account of their historic encounter. ;
I request an opportunity to meet with you at your earliest convenience to discuss these matters
further.
Walk in Balance
CC.
