York: "Ashley did give copies of our regulations to the wholesale dealers in the area earlier in
the year."
Holmes: "Places that I have sold to have always been very touchy about where and when the
shellfish were harvested"
Thomas: "I find it very hard to believe that these wholesalers don't know the regulations in
Mashpee. Tags show that they had come from SC16 and yet they take them. I know they have
been told and they can't play ignorant in that sense."
Opie: "Wholesale owners may know that, but other floor workers may not. They probably think
that they are licensed grant holders within the town."
Marques: "Is there any consequences for the wholesale dealer?"
Opie: "I haven't found anything in the regulations that require wholesale dealers to know each
individual town's bylaws or regulations other than the permit, transaction card, and proper
tagging."
Thomas: "What about if the town is shut down due to contamination? Does the wholesaler get
that information?"
Opie: "Contaminated areas are a different situation entirely. That is issued at the state level."
York: "It's the honor system entirely for these commercial diggers. That may also be a concern
for public health if the digger is falsely reporting harvests, for instance what happened in
Falmouth with Hendricks."
Opie: "That is why enforcement is so important."
Holmes: "What time of the day is this stuff being taken?"
Opie: "All different times of the day. I have been working with Richard Cook who believes his
product is being taken during the night."
Fisher: "Enforcement has increased significantly and night patrols are now occurring."
Thomas: "Thank you for being involved,we really appreciate this additional enforcement from
the Environmental Police."
Opie: "So far, from all the encounters with both the commercial diggers and the wholesale
dealers I have had the markets are no longer accepting Mashpee Oysters that do not come from a
licensed aquaculturist."
York: "We are requesting that the commercial permit for Thompson be either revoked or
suspended? Can we do that?"
