prevent this from happening again. Maybe we should start thinking of reducing our number of
days we are open to shellfishing?"
York: "Unfortunately the tribe would be exempt from that regulation if it was put in place. So
therefore we cannot alter our days open in the town."
Thomas: "We need more enforcement on the water then and the staff to do it."
Old Business:
Shellfish Aquacufture License Interest in the Waquoit Bay Area:Scott Matoian
Matoian: "I have chosen a 1.9 acre parcel in Hamblin Pond, just north of the small island on the
Mashpee Falmouth town line. I went out with my father and surveyed the area and mapped the
1.9 acres. I have experience working on aquaculture grants and I am also a graduate from
Massachusetts Maritime Academy. In the future I would love to work on the water and grow
oysters in floating cages as well as possible trying to grow scallops in the proposed area."
Marques: "How far off the island are you?"
Matoian: "I am outside the abutting limit to a salt marsh and the closed I come to the islands
parcel lines on the tow GIS is 35 feet. There is also no shellfish resources in the area, the bottom
sediment is mostly muck."
York: "Yes, it is all muck in that area. It was also an area deemed an area of least conflict for a
future aquaculture site."
Marques: "How deep is the water at low tide?"
Matoian: "The deepest depth in the area is 3 feet at low tide. Also, the area will not affect boat
navigation and the island is deemed to be an unbuildable lot. "
Marques: "10% of the grant area will be utilized for floating gear?"
Fisher: "Yes,he has the option of utilizing 10% of the total grant area or 20,000 square feet
whichever is greater."
Matoian: "I am currently looking into either purchasing the flow and grow system or the oyster
grow system. I want to model my gear after Mike Ronhock's grant, a grant I worked on in the
past."
Holmes: "What is your time frame for starting?"
Matoian: "As soon as possible, but I'm not going to rush anything either. I know it is a process
between the state and the town permitting it may take a little while."
