The Chair also referenced the No Place for Hate Proclamation, signed by Town staff and organizations
in Mashpee, and inquired whether there was interest among Committee members to revive the
Proclamation. Copies were distributed. The Chair also distributed the Resolution of Respect,
previously signed by students at the High School. Ms. Waterman read a Proclamation that had been
previously presented to the Board of Selectmen. The Chair stated that she was in receipt of
information from the Human Rights Club at the High School, which was having difficulty organizing
and was considering reaching out to younger students. Ms. Wilson referenced the Barnstable County's
Human Rights Commission's Annual Human Rights Academy that would take place in May at Cape
Cod Academy. There was discussion also about working with the Youth Council and attending
traditional annual events that took place in Mashpee, such as the Pow Wow, Oktoberfest and the
Christmas Parade. Selectman Cotton announced that Boy Scouts had recently been re-named
Scouting, allowing girls to join and achieve Eagle Scout, but Girl Scouts remained separate and female
only. Three Scouting groups were located on Cape Cod.
The Chair suggested the possibility of reaching out to the variety of residential associations located in
Mashpee, as a means to address any issues that may occur. The Chair referenced a specific issue that
occurred and Ms. Johnson-Graham expressed discomfort she experienced at New Seabury. The Chair
suggested that reaching out to the various neighborhoods could help to bring more people together.
The Chair added that the New Seabury community also contributed to the Town, such as their Garden
Club. Ms. Wilson inquired how it would relate to the Committee's mission and the Chair responded
that it would serve as a means to be more welcoming and help bring people together. The Chair
referenced another discriminatory incident that occurred at another community, which was addressed
by the community's Board. Ms. Doyle suggested that most neighborhoods did not have associations,
so it would single out just those associations. Ms. Nadeau suggested that, any event sponsored by the
Committee, could be distributed to all on a master list, which could include the associations, who could
then forward to their residents. The Chair suggested bringing back the Welcome Wagon.
Ms. Nadeau indicated that she had attended the documentary, Mashpee Nine, adding that the room was
full of attendees. Ms. Nadeau suggested collaborating with the TV station to sponsor a series of people
telling their stories of diversity. Additionally, Ms. Nadeau suggested sponsoring an essay contest,
open to all ages, which would focus on what diversity meant to the individual, possibly collaborating
with the Library. Another collaboration with the Library could be a Community Reads program,
choosing a book and then coordinating activities linked to the book. The Chair referenced Falmouth's
MLK Breakfast and student work presented, and suggested offering an art contest.
There was discussion regarding the need for others to be involved with sub committees and the
possibility of the MIDC meeting for one hour, with sub committees meeting afterwards for '/z hour.
Ms. Nadeau volunteered to work on a subcommittee for developing an essay contest in collaboration
with the Library and Ms. Wilson and Ms. DeBoer expressed interest in joining her. Ms. DeBoer
suggested that businesses would likely donate awards and Ms. Waterman suggested that awarding
could occur at a Peace Breakfast.
The Chair reported that the MIDC was invited to set up a table at Falmouth's event, but she did not do
so as there were no materials to distribute. Once brochures or other informational materials or projects
were developed, the Committee may wish to participate in such events as Oktoberfest. There was
discussion about providing items such as t-shirts, balloons or bracelets to share messaging that
supported diversity. Mr. Horner stated that a Mashpee Commons business may be willing to help fund
promotional materials with their business placed on the shirt. Ms. DeBoer suggested that students
3
