Mashpee Wakeby Lake Management: Perry Ellis reported that there was good water flow
observed to aid the recovery ofthe Herring run this spring.Discussions continued regarding State user fee
and costs for workers to collect fees and also increase presence to ward off illegal activities.
Water Quality: lick York reported that last week,we deployed the newest water duality
monitoring unit in Popponesset Bay off Gooseberry Island. This new unit and deployment site fills a
gap
because previously there was no unit moored in Popponesset Bay. It is a state-of-the-art YS 16600 sonde
measuring chlorophyll, dissolved oxygen(new type optical sensor),pH, salinity temperature, turbidity and
water depth every 15 minutes 24 hours a day for deployments of a month or more between temporary
removal for data upload and maintenance. It was purchased by the 1 Ma hpee Wampan ag Tribe and is part
of the collaborative water Quality Monitoring Program that we have with them. Another sonde that they
purchased is in Santuit Pond. lick York has been taking samples from the Pond and found a winter algae
bloom of diatoms. They are good algae in contrast to the potentially toxic summer blue-green algae
bloom. The water level in the pond was lowered during the winter to inspect the darn, but is back up now.
In the process, more water and nutrients were drained to Popponesset Bay and Nantucket Sound during the
winter when they have less impact.Ken Bates mentioned that Steve Pinard was planning meetings in
preparation for the summer water Quality Testing Program.
Jerry Daly discussed Santuit Pond issues and discussions followed between Dick York and Perry
Ellis on water quality issues and water depth.Boards were returned to water exit location after removal due
to State mandated precautions to reduce flooding risk. Vater level was rising. Dick York mentioned that
funding requests for pollution source identification was submitted today.
Iden Bates reported meeting between Town and Tribal Environmental department committees
were progressing.A resolve of agreements was under review by Board of Selectmen. The Board of
Selectmen are the only authority to negotiate cost participation and amounts with the Tribe.
Public Access: No report
Old Business
Ken Bates reported Popponesset Bay dredging has been completed.A new Falmouth\ aquoit dredging
plan and dredge materials relocation have been in discussions and an inter Town agreement for disposal has
been signed by The Board ofSelectmen. No Falmouth permit issued as of this writing.
Ken Bates made available detailed studies of Mashpee mooring fees as a revenue stream and how local
towns nearby create their revenue streams to accomplish waterways maintenance.
New Business:
The failure of Mashpee to secure lands suitable for Town Marina use was discussed with details that would
encourage future development. Due to the tremendous income enjoyed by other towns from slip
fees/wharfage,employment opportunities for town residents and the observed demand for local marina
enjoyment this topic will be one considered under future development. Discussions also followed regarding
Ockway Bay as a potential site for dredging and potential marina development.
Correspondence
Several Pieces of mail and information was made available to Committee members.
A motion to adjourn at 10.45AM, was made by Perry Ellis, seconded by Al wicket and unanimously
approved.
NEXT MEETING ETII II WILL BE TUE APRIL 14,2009,9:00 AS I,MEETIN DOOM AT THE
TOWN HALL
# i
