F'
Z
Mr. York reports that the water temperatures have been very warm with Wa uoit
Bay being up to 83 degrees and Popponessett being as high as 85 degrees. This is
not unusual for this time of year.
As was previously reported, we had a shellfish spawn in May, and we have just had
another spawn last week. We have a little over 2 nfillion quahog seed, and I
million scallop seed on order which worked well for us last year and we have just
ordered for the first time 120 thousand soft-shell clams.
Rick reports that the new Waterways Assistants are working out very well and
proving to be a big help to he and Terry Ellis. Also reported was that Americorps is
working hard on water quality testing.
Jinn Hanks, as well as other connnission members discussed with Rick, their plans
and dates for conducting the next water testing
. Committee Reports
Fresh Water-—Wflliam Taylor.
W. Taylor reports that a meeting was held and work was done on the flyer that is in
progress. There was concern ar'nong conunittee members that the Harbormaster's
personnel, in the area of enforcing the Lake's rules and regulations, were not
wording there enough coverage.
Popponesset Bay Area—Herb Silver.
Mr. Silver reports that everything is much the sane. The,Tet skiers are out in
ckway Bay and Popponesset Bay. There is an abandoned boat out in Ockway Bay
that our Harbormaster has been made aware of, which is half submerged at this
point. MT. Hanks asked Mr. Ellis ghat was going to be done regarding the
abandoned craft. Perry informed us that he knows someone from Plymouth who
has interest in the boat and is going to cone pick it up.
Where was discussion as to whose responsibility the vessel anally is. Herb Silver
expressed concern that given the Fact that the Water-ways Commission is aware of
the abandoned boat, if anything were to happen, we could be liable or at least
criticised for not taking care of it. fir. Silver recommended, and commission
members agreed, to give it one month to see if someone carnes to claim it, at that
point if the boat is still an issue, the commission will reassess the situation.
Herb continued to inform us that there are a lot of fish to be seen jumping out of the
water around the New Seabury Marina. They mostly look like good-sized bass and
herring. other than that, there Is a lot of activity present in and around the Bay.
There are a lot of kayakers as well as personal watercraft being used. The jet skis
are very popular around low tide because no one can get in and supervise their use.
A lot of swimmers and young children are noticeable at the beginning of the creek.
Waquoit Bay—Jim Hanks.
