Jim Hanks explained that we had only preliminary drawings as the
final design has not been done yet.
Gregory Smith, representing Save Popponesset Bay Incorporated presented information
regarding their intentions to seek Ton support to dredge the channel outside Popponesst Bay
and to nourish Iopponeset Spit with the dredged material. They also are working with the
Array Corps of Engineers for a longer-terra solution to protecting'the Spit that would involve
extensive beach nourishment using sand mined from offshore or any other suitable source. They
are emulating what has been done by the Three Bays organization to re-build Dead Fleck over on
Sampson's Island in Cotuit. The Army Corps of Engineers has required additional study of an
alternative that includes spending money on evaluating the feasibility of dredging around the
south end of Poppone set Island and putting in a drawbridge to allow boat passage. This i
recognized as an unrealistic idea, and therefore they are going through the political route to cut
through the red tape and determine a realistic plan.
William Cohen pointed out that the Spit is used by many residents of Ma hpee and other towns,,
and is not just of benefit to New Se bury. He also that it is all private money that has been
pursuing these issues to the benefit of all. Putting the dredged material on the Spit is a common
sense issue.
Herb Silver asked if any of this group attends Town Meeting. He suggested that they would do
well to spew at Town Meeting to advocate their cause. Greg Smith responded they are attending
Page 1 of
