8
Board of Selectmen
Minutes
April 29, 2019
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PRESENTATIONS/DISCUSSION
Tom Feronti: (continued)
With regards to the existing Mashpee Commons wastewater treatment plant which is sited 250'
from one neighbor and 100-150' from another, no complaints are registered.
In considering the Industrial Area of Mashpee it was suggested the Town reach out to promote
research with area hospitals and scientific establishments. It was noted the hospital and WHOI
were invited but declined to attend this meeting.
Tom Fudala indicated the Town had a very active EDIC in the 1990's with an Economic
Development Coordinator position that was eliminated. Mr. Fudala recommended the Town
employ a professional consultant to advise the Town on housing development, on ways to
improve wages, improve the skills of local population and how to get jobs and the good paying
jobs as reflected in the Local Comprehensive Plan.
It was noted the Town of Mashpee has an above state average income. The housing problem
may be a larger issue than the wage issue.
It is likely that new development would attract more entrepreneurial businesses. EDIC member
and Chamber of Commerce President Patrice Pimental agreed there are a lot of entrepreneurs in
the Town of Mashpee. Over the past two years, 46 new businesses have joined the Chamber
which has approximately 350 members strong as a result of the value that Mashpee brings. The
biggest challenge businesses are facing is finding the workforce.
Town Planner Evan Lehrer indicated there is a need to increase density to accommodate housing.
Mr. Lehrer recommended the Town update the existing Local Comprehensive Plan to reflect the
needs of today. We spend a lot of tax dollars educating our children. Where are they going to
live and work? Mr. Lehrer suggested the Town continue to invest in the workforce and work to
create a community for which you would want to live and stay in the Town of Mashpee.
ADJOURNMENT
Motion made by Selectman Gottlieb to adjourn at 7:55 p.m.
Motion seconded by Selectman Cahalane.
VOTE: Unanimous. 4-0.
Roll Call Vote:
Selectman Sherman,yes Selectman Cahalane,yes Selectman Gottlieb,yes
Selectman Cotton,yes Opposed, none
Respectfully submitted,
Kathleen M.
