Mashpee Inclusion &Diversity Committee
Meeting Minutes
May 14,2019 at 10:00 am
Mashpee Town Hall-Waquoit Meeting Room
Present: Chairwoman J. Marie Stevenson, Winnie Johnson-Graham, Gail Wilson, Lynne Waterman, JoAnn
Nadeau, Louis Horner, Elana Doyle, Patty DeBoer, Xavier Gonsalves (Non-Voting Member)
Absent: Katherine Brown
CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order, by the Chair, with a quorum present.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES April 9, 2019
MOTION: Ms. Johnson-Graham made a motion to approve the minutes. Mr. Horner seconded the
motion. All voted unanimously.
APPOINTMENTS & HEARINGS
None at this time
COMMUNICATIONS & CORRESPONDENCE
The Chair reported that a letter was received from Deborah Davis. The Chair read the letter from Ms.
Davis. Ms. Davis would be relocating to Mashpee and was interested in becoming involved and had prior
experience organizing Race Amity Day in Natick. The Chair responded to Ms. Davis' letter with the ways in
which the Committee could be contacted. There was consensus to invite Ms. Davis to attend a future meeting.
Information was also received from Falmouth resident, Brenda Nolan, regarding Restorative Justice. Ms. Nolan
was interested in explaining Restorative Justice further to address conflict and harm and efforts reaching out to
other communities. Ms. Waterman suggested that communications be forwarded to Committee members in
advance of the meeting, or copies provided at the meeting, to be better informed. Additionally, Ms. Waterman
recommended that communications received should be understood as to whether or not it is from a Mashpee
resident and whether it was representative of a specific group, organization or community. Ms. Doyle
expressed her interest in reviewing the referenced legislation before inviting Ms. Nolan to speak to the
Committee. The Chair will forward the information to the Committee to discuss the matter at a future meeting.
Ms. Nadeau noted that it was positive that individuals were finding the Committee and communities were
reaching out to one another, adding that it would be helpful for Committee members to learn more about
individual contacts to consider inviting to share with the Committee.
OLD BUSINESS
Child Care for Town Meeting-Ms. DeBoer reported that there were five children in attendance, three
of whom signed up in advance. The Assistant Principal and the Key Club advisor served as adults in charge
and Key Club students volunteered to assist with childcare. Children left the program by 8:30 p.m. It was
suggested that more prominent signage may allow for ease of access, as well as collecting participants in the
cafeteria. The next meeting would be in October and it was suggested to keep the option for enrollment open
until the day of Town Meeting. Ms. DeBoer confirmed that drop-ins would be fine with the availability of the
sign in form. There was consensus that, in time, the program could become more popular as it became more
known. Ms. DeBoer would be following up with a few of the participants for feedback regarding the activities.
MIDC Brochure Subcommittee-The Chair confirmed that she had followed up with Mary Lou
Palumbo at the Chamber of Commerce, who was also working on their resource. The MIDC would be added to
the Chamber's resource. The Chamber may be able to assist in potential future fundraising efforts. The Chair
