roadside portion of the parcel informing the public of this situation. Additionally, the commission
wants to receive documentation as to the ongoing monitoring and details thereof from AFCEC.
UPDATE: Upper Quashnet Restoration/ Horsley Witten Group:
The Agent provided details of a meeting with Neal Price of Horsley Witten Group, who has been
selected to manage the restoration of the Upper Quashnet River project. At this meeting, we
discussed the financial details, invoicing parameters and project goals, which include restoration
of a cold water fishery, anadromous fish passage improvements and aquatic habitat
improvements. A site visit took place with Neal Price, Dale McKay and Assistant Agent Katelyn
Cadoret to assess the existing conditions of the Upper Quashnet River and associated
abandoned bogs. Horsley Witten will provide updated financial costs and a contract for services,
which will be done in phases. An additional discussion on the possibility of a feasibility study to
assess wetland restoration as part of the Upper Quashnet restoration also took place.
REQUEST FOR FUNDING: Replacement of the Mashpee River Woodlands sign in the
south parking lot with a new sign.
The Agent described the request. The current Mashpee River Woodlands sign is dilapidated
and in need of repair. Asst. Agent Cadoret attained a cost quote from Mike Day of Day Signs
for replacing the sign. Mike Day has done sign work for the Conservation Dept in the past and
does great work. The new sign will be made from a poly-carbonate material that lasts much
longer than wood and all details of the old sign will be included in the new sign. The cost for the
sign is $995.00, which can be drawn from the commission's Land and Maintenance Account.
Removal of the current sign and installation of the new sign will be done by Mashpee DPW. The
Agent requested a vote of the commission to approve this funding
Motion: Mr. Smith moved to approve the funding for this project. Mr. Dalton seconded the
motion. Vote 5-0 Unanimous.
Administrate Approval Request: Waguoit Bay Research Reserve- Marsh mats Pilot Test
Megan Tyrrell, Research Coordinator of the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve
(WBNERR) described the project to the commission. The purpose of this pilot test is to assess
improvements of the nesting habitat for the declining Salt Marsh Sparrow, who's habitat
requirements are very specific. Sea level rise is impacting these habitats and thus this pilot study
seeks to find ways to increase the habitat resiliency of the Salt Marsh Sparrow. The location of
this pilot study is adjacent to a small salt pond area associated with Sedge Lot Pond in the South
Cape Beach State Park. There was some additional discussion on this project between the
applicant and the commission. The Agent recommended approval of this administrative request
with conditions as discussed and based on what is proposed in the project narrative. The
commission is requiring the removal of any non-biodegradable materials at the conclusion of this
project.
Motion: Mr. Smith moved to approve the administrative request, seconded by Mr. Sweet
5-0 unanimous.
Motion: Mr. Sweet moved to adjourn, seconded by Mr. Smith. Vote 5-0
Meeting adjourned 7:15 p.m.
Submitted by Andrew McManus
Conservation Agent
