Board of Selectmen
Minutes
July 8, 2019
Board of Selectmen Meeting re-convened: 7:19 p.m.
Discussion and Approval of Amendment to Cemetery Rules and Regulations:
Department of Public Works Director Catherine Laurent:
Catherine Laurent, Director of Public Works was in attendance with Cemetery Commissioner Ernest
Virgilio to recommend amendments to the Cemetery Rules & Regulations. The Cemetery
Commission at their May 22, 2019 meeting voted to recommend approval of the amendments as
follows;
Section VII F. Instructions to Lot Holders and Lot Holders' Rights
Section XI G. Decoration of Plots
The first amendment allows for interment of cremains within the same grave, and gives the option for
a family to select a designated casket grave to be used for two cremations (same size as a cremation
plot but front/back instead of side/side). Currently, neither is allowed. The restriction is for one
remains in a grave.
The second amendment would address issues of enforcement with respect to the existing regulations.
A number of plot holders have planted shrubs in violation of the regulations. The amendment would
allow shrubs to be planted provided they are planted within a specified area and maintained. The
amendment also clarifies what decorations are allowed on the plot to avoid hazardous conditions and
a challenge for maintenance.
Town Manager Rodney C. Collins indicated several individuals expressed interest with regards to the
modifications and attended the meetings to which the modifications were discussed.
Motion made by Selectman Sherman to approve the Amendments to the Cemetery Rules &
Regulations as presented.
Motion seconded by Selectman Cotton.
VOTE: Unanimous. 4-0.
Roll Call Vote:
Selectman Gottlieb,yes Selectman Cotton,yes Selectman O'Hara,yes
Selectman Sherman,yes Opposed, none
7
