10
Board of Selectmen
Minutes
July 22, 2019
OLD BUSINESS
Discussion and Approval of Change of Polling Place for May, 2020 Elections:
(Continued from July 8, 2019): Town Manager Rodney Collins: (continued)
Deborah Dami, Town Cleric conveyed several concerns to the Board of Selectmen. Ms. Dami
recommended the Board consider a ballot question to let the voters determine where the polls should
be located. The use of the Quashnet School represents a hardship to the elderly voters who require
walking a great distance from the parking lot to the school gymnasium and restrooms although not
regularly used during voting may represent a potential breach in security.
Ms. Dami also made note of overtime expenses for staff members, DPW support and police detail
officers. Voting is a long day for the poll workers some of which are required to set up. It was noted
the school day ends at 3:35 p.m. It would be permissible for Town employees to set up after this time.
Saturday elections were considered, but deemed low in terms of attendance.
The Board of Selectmen acted as follows;
Motion made by Selectman Cotton to hold the Special Election on October 1, 2019 at
The Christ the King Church Parish Hall.
Motion seconded by Selectman O'Hara.
VOTE: Unanimous. 4-0.
Roll Call Vote:
Selectman Gottlieb,yes Selectman Cotton,yes Selectman O'Hara,yes
Selectman Sherman,yes Opposed, none
Motion made by Selectman Cotton effective March 3, 2020 the polling place would move to the
Quashnet School. Additional funds or Police Detail Officers would not affect the Town Clerk's
operating budget. And, the Town will accommodate the additional set up costs to satisfy the
Town Clerk's Office for the benefit of security on a broader scale for all citizens to ensure their
well-being and safety.
Motion seconded by Selectman O'Hara.
VOTE: Unanimous. 4-0.
Roll Call Vote:
Selectman Gottlieb,yes Selectman Cotton,yes Selectman O'Hara,yes
Selectman Sherman,yes Opposed, none
Town Manager Rodney C.
