-Our FLUPSY(FLoating UPweller SYstem)docks 1-3 are up and running for the small quahog <br /> seed,and we are working on getting our 4-5 docks set up for lager sized seed.We are also <br /> working on our bottom trays and reconstructing them to be deployed in the southernmost site <br /> in Great River where the quahogs will remain until they reach planting size. <br /> -The Shellfish Division received 1,OOOn remote set oyster bays on July 6th,and they were all <br /> deposited in the Mashpee River that same day.The set was feed algae in circular tanks at the <br /> Aquaculture Research Cooperation in Dennis for two weeks,and the oysters set on the Sea <br /> Clam shell already seem to have grown to approximately 2 millimeters in size. <br /> - Partnering with the Town of Falmouth's Marine and Environmental Affairs and Chuck <br /> Martenson the Shellfish Division was able to install a small floating farm in the Mashpee River. <br /> This is a first for Mashpee using this type of system.Deployed in the floating bags are both 1st <br /> year and 2nd year oysters.The goal of the project is to compare the amount of nutrient <br /> removal seen in the bags vs.the bottom trays.The Shellfish Division is also comparing the <br /> nutrient removal and mortality data with the trays and the other farms installed in Little Pond in <br /> Falmouth.The project is exciting because two towns will be comparing nutrient removal rates <br /> seen by oysters in two different water bodies. <br /> -Patrol Log: 1 citation was issued to a commercial harvester with a Falmouth License fishing <br /> on the Mashpee Side of Waquoit Bay. He was found to have 20%seed in his catch and was <br /> issued a citation in the amount of fifty dollars.The individual has decided to fight the citation in <br /> Falmouth District Court,and Ashley awaiting a hearing date. <br /> -Aquaculture Licenses:The Shellfish Commission has decided to move forward to the Board <br /> of Selectman and request a moratorium on the issuance of any new Shellfish Aquaculture <br /> Licenses with the exception of Burtis, Bohnenberger, Matoain,Smith,and Cook.This would <br /> prevent the expectance of any NEW applications for new sites to the Shellfish Constable.The <br /> moratorium will remain in place until the Aquaculture Regulations and mapping system/waitlist <br /> is approved by the Board of Selectman. Bohnenberger is scheduled to be heard by the Board <br /> of Selectman on July 22nd for his proposed Aquaculture License relocation in Ockway Bay. <br /> Committee Reports;, <br /> Mashpee/Wakeby and John's Pond and fresh waters: Don MacDonald asked for a status on <br /> efforts to pull back sand deposits created by power loading on the ramp.There are issues <br /> regarding the distance from land and equipment needed.Jeff Smith will make a site visit to <br /> assess. He will also contact Doug Cameron of the State's Office of Fisheries&Boating to <br /> determine if they can assist. <br /> Popponesset Bay Area: No report <br /> Waquoit Bay Area: No report <br /> Water Quality: Don MacDonald reported that the first sampling date was on Monday 7/8. <br /> There were a few issues getting all of the sampling boats on the water but the volunteer team <br /> did a great job working around them.Sampling dates have been set for the remainder of the <br /> season. Brian Howes, UMD will present the sampling results from the 2018 season at the BOS <br /> meeting on 7/22. <br /> Barnstable County Coastal Resources: No report <br /> Sewer Commission: Ken mentioned that we still need to appoint someone from the <br /> Waterways Commission to the Sewer Committee as our liaison.After conversation it was <br /> decided to hold off on our appointment until the Sewer Committee has progressed their own <br /> agenda further. <br /> Public Access: It was reported that it is busy with long lines and lots of cars parked on and <br /> near the access points but everything seems to be functioning well. <br /> Waterways Improvement Plans: No report on the progress of the Channel Expansion project. <br /> It was reported that there is a new county dredge coordinator, Christine Player for Foth <br /> Engineering.She is in the process of contacting towns to get information on dredging <br /> programs. <br /> New Business: <br /> None <br /> Additional Topics: <br /> None <br />
